BATTERY
(KBA TYPE)

1. Treatments Before Starting Use

The storage battery is delivered in a condition completed with initial charge.

Give treatments of the following sequence before putting it into service.
Ignitable gases may be generated from the storage battery. Provide sufficient
ventilation and keep the storage battery away from sparks and fire drawn near.

1.1 Unpacking and Inspection

(1) Upon arrival, inspect for any damage to the packing and then unpack them
carefully not to give impact to the storage battery. Perform the unpacking at a
place adjacent to the battery installation location. Move the storage battery by
supporting it at the bottom, not by lifting the terminals. Be careful that the seal
may be disrupted if the battery is moved with force imposed on the terminals.
(2) After unpacking, check the quantity of accessories and the appearance.
(3) This storage battery being negative electrode absorption system sealed
type requires no checking for electrolyte level and water replenishment.

1.2 Installation and Connection

(1) After verifying no abnormalities in the storage battery, install it on the
prescribed location (eg. cubicle or battery stand).
(2) If the storage battery is to be accommodated in a cubicle, place it at the
lowest part of the cubicle whenever it is practicable.
(3) Always avoid to install the storage close to a heat source(such as a
transformer).
(4) Since a storage battery may generate ignitable gases, avoid to install
close to any item that produces sparks(such as switch fuses).
(5) Batteries incorporate a unique design that effectively controls generation
of gases by way of recombination in normal usage but, when the batteries are
unstable state by surrounding, ventilation shall be required

number }
(6) Before making connections, polish the joint surfaces of the battery
terminals to bright metal by a wire brush.
(7) When multiple number of the batteries are used, first make the inter-battery
connections in a correct manner, and then connect the storage battery with
the charge or the load.In this cases, the positive(+) pole of the storage battery
should be securely connected to the positive(+) terminal of the charger or the

load, and the negative(-) of the battery to the negative(-) of the charger or the
load respectively.
If the storage battery and the charger are connected erroneously, the
charger will be damaged.
Be sure not to make an erroneous connection.
The tightening torque for each connecting bolt and nut shall be in
accordance with Table 1.

1.3 Supplementary Charge

(1) Part of the battery capacity will have been lost due to self-
discharge(about 2.5%/month/25℃) during transportation or storage. Give
suplementary charge before putting into service.
(2) If the batteries are stored for a long period, give supplementary charge
once every 6 months by the following conditions.
. Daily Maintenance and Handling
2.1 Discharge
(1) Final discharge voltage is as shown in Table 4. Keep the battery terminal
voltage not to fall below it.
(2) Do not leave the battery in discharge condition. Charge it immediately.
Also when the battery has been over-discharged by mistake, charge it
immediately.

2.2 Charge
(1) Charging Voltage
Floating charge voltage shall be maintained across the terminals
constantly at the values shown in Table 3.
Table 3 : Charging Voltage
Max. Charge
Using Type Charging Voltage(V)
Current(CA)
Floating Use 2.23~2.25V /Cell 0.25
Cycle Use 2.40V /Cell 0.25
The effects of too high or too low a charging voltage are as follows : Too high
for extended period(over-charge) : Shortens life
Too low for extended period(under-charge) : May not satisfy load or cause
variance in battery voltage

(2) Recovery Charge

- 2 -
Recovery charge shall be performed with the same set voltage as charging
Voltage shown in Table 3
While initial charge current is not specially specified, if shortening of
charge time(capacity recovery within 24 hours) is sought, 0.1C - 0.2C
amperes would be appreciate.
(3) Temperature compensation of the charging voltage
As a general rule, in order to attain optimum service life, the use of a
temperature compensated charger is recommended. The recommended
compensation factor for ESG batteries is -3mV/℃/cell.
example) If battery surrounding temperature is 40℃, float charge voltage
set up 13.38V
13.65V + {(40-25)℃×(-3mV/℃/cell)×6cell} = 13.38V

Average Final Discharge

Discharge Current(A) Voltage(V/cell/25℃)
0.1CA or current close to it 1.80V
0.2CA or current close to it 1.70V
0.3CA or current close to it 1.70V
0.6CA or current close to it 1.60V
1.0CA or current over to it 1.5V

2.3 Inspection and Maintenance

In order to prevent battery troubles, inspect the battery regularly.

2.4 Other Caution

(1) Clean the battery with wet cloths. Never have the battery splashed or
deposited with oils or organic solvents such as gasoline and paint
thinner, nor have it cleaned with cloths impregnated with these materials.
Avoid dusting by “cloth duster” or cleaning by dry cloth(particularly
chemical textile) as they will generate static electricity which is
dangerous.
(2) A storage battery may generate ignitable gases. Never draw fire nor
have the battery short circuited.
(3) Do not attempt to dismantle the storage battery If sulfuric acid is
deposited due to mechanical damages on to skin or clothes, wash with
liberal amount to fresh water and get immediate medical attention.

- 4 -
(4) A storage battery is liable to rupture if thrown into fire. Avoid such
conduct at all times.
(5) When the storage battery is to be contained in a container or bag, a
ventilation opening should be provided. A cubicle containing the battery
and a storage battery room should be provided with sufficient
ventilation.
(6) One may get electric shock if touches electrically conductive part. Be
sure to wear rubber gloves before inspection or maintenance work.
(7) Apply lightly a rust preventing agent for lead acid storage batteries on
connections of the storage battery.
(8) Permissible temperature range of battery use is -15~40℃, but use at
5~30℃ range is recommended as far as practicable.
Battery temperature should not need exceed 45℃ in service.
(9) When the storage battery will be used in parallel connection, consult
withus prior to use.
(10)Mixed use of storage batteries with different capacities, different
histories and of different manufactures is liable to cause damages to the
storage battery or the equipment. Consult with us if such necessity is
present.
3. Storage
(1) When to store the storage battery, disconnect if from the charger and
load, and store it, if possible, at dry location with low temperature.

(2) When storing batteries, it is recommended to place them at low

temperature [possibly between 0℃ and 10℃] to insure long retained
capacity. The higher temperature, the more the self-discharge, and storage
for a long period at elevated temperature should always be avoid.
(3) If the batteries are stored for a long period, give supplementary charge
by the conditions indicated in Table 2.
(4) Caution During Charge
①If the charge current exceeds 0.05C ampere. at the final stage of the
charge, the storage battery may cause permanent deterioration in
appearance, performance and life. Pay special attention to the charge
voltage.

- 5 -
②The battery charger to be used should be the one provided with
automatic constant voltage equipment having drooping characteristics. If
other charger than this type is used, consult with us prior to use.
