CULTURE BEFORE CURRICULUM

The video talks about what lies behind the visible curriculum. The speaker have
pointed out that the culture of learning has a bigger impact in the growth of students than
their ranks based on academic performance. Iceberg is a reminiscent of the curriculum
for there are two-faced of learning that takes place in school. It’s the conscious learning
and sub-conscious learning that take shares on the holistic development of a child. In
most of schools, conscious learning becomes visible through sorting and ranking the
students according to scores and fixed result. That is why visible curriculum is
compartmentalised into subjects with designated level of knowledge and skill a child
should attain. Thus, conscious learning are assessed through proficiency and mastery.
But the truth is, much of the learning actually happens at the child’s sub-consciousness.
Student's attitude, behaviour and capacities are formed from the hidden curriculum. The
child’s empirical knowledge and emotions are the roots of their characteristic in adulthood.
And on the same manner, they form their preferences and inclinations through that hidden
curriculum. Experiential knowledge are influenced by the learner's senses, emotions, and
imagination. These are the foundation of real growth as the child forms their view of
themselves in the real world because sub-conscious that does not change through time.
The only way not to detriment that growth is to stop calibrating learning with fixed score
because learning cannot be encapsulated numerically alone. It should be taken account
that self descriptives such as dreams, ambitions, inclinations, hopes and fear gives a
person the vision and purpose in life that matters most. All of these things are anchored
in the culture of learning at school.
If I were to own a school, the concept I will incorporate in managing it is to
acknowledge the progress a child can attain in his or her sub-conscious learning. This
can be possible through extracurricular activities that will allow them to explore more
about themselves and the environment. I believe that if this is given an attention and
guide then it can shape their character into a better adult someday. The conclusion that
can be drawn from this concept is that visible curriculum should not be the sole basis of
growth in school. However, academic knowledge would still be the at the core curriculum
for literacy, numeracy and other related skills. In concern with the future plans of
developing the curriculum in our educational system it must be realize how to bring out
the importance of hidden curriculum as it weigh the same with visible curriculum. Apart
from it, the culture in school where each potential roots also plays a big part on the hidden
curriculum. The culture of learning that immense in the school reflects on the core values
it adheres, the vision and mission it defines and that includes the specific objectives it
hopes to achieve. These shows how the learners learn subconsciously in school and that
it really affects the ouput of each students. This should be as important with the visible
curriculum.
