PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT TO CAREER AND LIFE GOALS

How important is personal development to oour career development? What makes us
decide to be a teacher and not a nurse? What prompts us to engage in business rather
than work as an employee? How well do we know ourselves? And how well do we know
what we want in life.
Personal development precedes career development. One has to develop himself as a
person before one can decide on what he or she wants to do. It involves our personality,
our attitude, values, interests, and resources. We need to consider not only our talents,
abilities and interest but also our limitaions and resources. For instance, if you want to
become a doctor, ask yourself if you can face blood and stand the smell of the hospital.
Also, do you have the financial resources to complete the medical training?
Choosing a career is not a onetime decision. It is unravelling process. It evolves and
grows as you do. The things you do now in school, at home, and during your leisure
time will affect your future decisions and infuence your career. Thus, the way you use
your time now is important in determining your future occupation. Choosing a career
takes time of preparation and decision-making. It is not a one shot decision like
marriage where one is committed for the rest of his life.

YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT: YOU’RE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO

CLARIFY YOUR LIFE GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS
What’s your life mission? It’s not an easy question to answer, but an important one. You
can talk about your aspirations and goals all day, but when you write them down, they
become, well, more real. It’s a starting point to living the life you want. When you write a
personal mission statement, you’re clarifying what you want to accomplish and how,
and committing to it. Businesses and nonprofit organizations develop mission
statements for the same reason.

123
What is a personal mission statement?
Most students, and adults, don’t realize the importance of writing their personal
mission statements. It’s more than just your goals. Your mission statement will help you
sort out your priorities and how you want to live your life. It may include short-term and
long-term goals, or life-long aspirations. It becomes a guide and provides direction,
which comes from you, not someone else.
There’s no right or wrong way to approach your personal mission statement, or what it
should include. Everyone’s is going to be different. What’s important is to write it down.
Topics your personal mission statement may include:
 Education
 Career
 Personal attributes, such as honesty, loyalty and dedication
 Family and personal relationships
 How you want to live your life
 Sports
 Faith and spirituality
 Community service

Sample Personal Mission Statements:

Benjamin Franklin opted for a list of concepts and then wrote his thoughts about each to
form his mission statement. “Temperance: Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
Order: Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.
Resolution: Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve...”
Gandhi wrote his mission statement using active phrases such as “I will” or “I shall. “...I
shall not bear ill will toward anyone. I shall not submit to injustice from anyone. I shall
conquer untruth by truth...”
