TOPIC:   Decoding Texts WEEK/S Week 4

YEAR LEVEL: Year 3 LESSON DURATION:      80 Minutes PERIODS 6 Periods

LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S):

Students learn to fluently read and write multisyllabic words with more complex letter patterns and differentiate between homophones. They should
recognise and know how to write most high-frequency words including some homophones. Students will investigate how different types of texts vary
in use of language choices and be able to decode information present in a variety of texts.

ASSESSMENT TASKS:

Students will be asked to create a book together as a class, with each student being responsible for one set of pages. A paper will be folded in half and each half
will list a homophone. (e.g Rose/Rows). For the first page students will create a sentance using the word correctly (the students sat in rows.) with a corrisponding
picture. On the second half of the page they will use the ame sentance but with the other homophone to create a humourus situation which they will draw (the
students sat in rose = image of students sitting on thorny rose bushes)

Teachers can assign homophone pairs to students if neccesary. Once all pages are complete they can be stapled together to create a class book.

DIFFERENTIATION:

By using a variety of activites, students will be able to access the same information reguardless of initial English level.

Lower Level Learners

For students who require it and have been identified as needing additional help we have additional supporting material with a more visual focus and simpler language
which can allow these students who have difficulty reading primarily to still gather the same information and answer the questions effectively. This boils down for the
most part to simplified texts which relay the same information as those targeting the stronger students, as well as a focus on hands on kinesthetic activites which can
provide an alternate path for students to reach the same educational goal.

Higher Level Learners

For stronger students we have additional (optional) activities to do seperate from the remainder of the class, this comes in more if we have a number of students who
complete a task early but still a great number of the rest of the class still need to finish. We also attempt to make in-class formative assesment to be open ended so
that it leaves ample room for those who are able to go above and beyond others in the classroom to really shine.
