configuring the Microsoft Outlook 2007 client application to
use RPC over HTTP to connect to an RPC-enabled Microsoft

This document is intended to serve as a guide for configuring the Microsoft Outlook 2007 client
application to use RPC over HTTP to connect to an RPC-enabled Microsoft Exchange Server. If you are not
certain that this is what you are attempting to do, or if you need any assistance whatsoever, please call 1-
866-SMARSH-1 or email support@smarsh.com .

You will need the following information throughout these instructions:

 The back-end server name provided to you in the email this document was attached to.

 The Exchange Proxy Server Name: exmail.smarsh.com

 Exchange Webmail Access: http://exmail.smarsh.com

Prerequisites

 In order to complete these instructions your computer must be running a minimum of


Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Outlook 2007 or newer.

Creating the new Outlook Profile

1. Click Start and then click on the Control Panel icon in the menu.
2. Double click on the Mail icon.

3. You are then prompted to choose between E-mail Accounts, Data Files, and Profiles. Choose
Show Profiles. In the profiles window, click the Add button in the Mail dialog box.

4. Type in any name for the profile in the Profile Name text box. Click OK.

5. On the Add new e-mail account page, Manually configure server settings on the bottom of the
page and click Next.

6. On the next page, select Microsoft Exchange and click Next.

7. On the Exchange Server Settings page, enter the Microsoft Exchange BACKEND Server name
provided to you by Smarsh. It should be listed at the beginning of this document.
8. Type your email address in the User Name text box. Leave the Use Cached Exchange Mode
option checked.

9. Click the More Settings button.

* At this point, Outlook will most likely attempt to connect to the Exchange Server using the
incomplete information that has been provided thus far. Therefore, it might take up to 1-2
minutes for a response. Additionally, you should expect to see the following alert:

10. Click OK to close the alert.


11. After closing the alert above, you should see the screen below. Click Cancel.

a. You should now see the screen below which will allow you to complete the connection
to your Exchange Server. General Tab – Do not make any changes unless you have
explicit reason to do so.

b. Advanced Tab – Verify that Use Cached Exchange Mode is already checked.

c. Connection Tab - Select the Connect using my Local Area Network (LAN) option. Put a
checkmark in the Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP, and then click the
Exchange Proxy Settings button.

d. After clicking the Exchange Proxy Settings… button, the screen below will appear. In the
Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange text box insert the Exchange
Proxy Server Name provided to you by Smarsh. This server name should appear at the
beginning of this document and is not necessarily what appears in the pictures below.

i. DO NOT Check the option to Mutually authenticate the session when


connecting with SSL.
ii. Check the option On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect
using TCP/IP.

iii. Check the option On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect
using TCP/IP.
iv. Choose BASIC Authentication in the drop down box
v. Click OK on the Exchange Proxy Settings dialog box.

e. Click Apply and OK on the Microsoft Exchange Server dialog box.

12. Click Next on the Exchange Server Settings page.

13. Click Finish on the Congratulations! Page.

14. If your Mail Profile window is still open, ensure that your new profile is selected in the Always
use this profile dropdown list. Click Apply, then OK.

Open Outlook 2007 and logon with your username (email address) and password. You have successfully
setup your Exchange profile in Outlook. Allow a couple minutes for your new profile to synchronize with
the server as it downloads any mail, contacts, and calendar information that may reside on the server.
