temporary  nations.  The  split  was  solidified  with  the  Korean  War  (1950~1953),  when

there  can  be  more  personal  info  on  this

weapons  that  were  supplied  from  the  USSR.  (CIA - The World Factbook  )  This  caused

South  Korean  lines  to  be  pushed  back  to  the  Pusan  area  and  then  the  UN  troops  came  to

South  Korea.  Then  they  used  a  tactic  that  split  the  North  Korean  forces  into  two.  The  UN

troops  landed  in  Inchon  and  they  cut  the  supply  line  for  the  North  Koreans.  Then  the  UN

troops  started  to  march  up  the  Korean  peninsular  but  once  they  neared  the  Chinese

border  thousands  of  Chinese  troops  started  to  flood  the  down.  This  caused  the  UN  lines   student 1/26/11 2:55 PM

info  on  this  topic  because  it  seems  sudden
to  pushed  back.  The  war  reached  a  stalemate  and  an  armistice  was  signed.     that  the  Chinese  come  in

(Cayton)Technically  Korea  is  still  at  war  with  each  other.  This  led  the  two  nations  to

develop  two  totally  different  economies  and  governments.  North  Korea  continued  to

progress  under  the  communist  rule  under  Ill  Seong  Kim.  South  Korea  started  to  develop

democracy  but  fell  under  the  influence  of  military  dictators  for  a  period  of  time.

However,  through  demonstrations  and  protests  movements  South  Korea  was  able  to

develop  a  procedural  democracy.  South  Korea  was  created  a  strong  economy  that  is

based  on  global  trade  but  North  Korea  was  never  able  to  integrate  into  the  global

economy  and  they  are  very  bitter.  This  caused  them  to  develop  nuclear  weapons.

Recently  South  Korea  has  been  giving  aid  to  the  North  and  the  former  president  Kim

Dae-‐jung  was  able  to  receive  the  Noble  Peace  prize.  (Kim Dae-jung - Biography  )

However,  under  the  new  leadership  of  the  current  president  the  aid  has  been  reduced

and  this  seems  to  have  deteriorated  the  relationship  between  the  two  countries.

Recently  this  tension  has  been  causing  a  great  deal  of  international  problems.

North  Korea  has  been  causing  a  great  deal  of  trouble  recently.  The  UN  responded

by  creating  the  Six  Party  Talk  just  to  deal  with  the  problems  revolving  around  North

Korea.  However,  despite  the  creation  of  this  committee  North  Korea  has  been  difficult  to

deal  with.  North  Korea  has  been  noncompliant  with  the  Six  Party  Talks  and  they  stalled

the  nuclear  disbarment  programs.  Also  very  recently  there  has  been  the  issue  about

North  Korea  sinking  the  Korean  warship  Cheonan  and  the  bombing  of  Yeonpyeong.  This

has  caused  a  great  deal  of  international  tension  because  allegedly  North  Korea  has

opened  fire  into  South  Korea  that  might  reinitiate  a  new  war.  The  first  charge  against

the  sinking  of  the  Cheonan  remains  a  mystery  if  North  Korea  had  done  so  but  nations

around  the  world  have  agreed  on  most  part  that  the  attack  was  instigated  by  North

Korea.  Now  the  second  issue  remains  clear  that  North  Korea  opened  fired  into  South

Korean  territory.  There  were  a  few  casualties  with  this  attack  and  it  has  caused  an

international  crisis.  (Martin    Fackler)  The  relationship  between  the  two  nations  was

deteriorating  and  recently  it  has  hit  an  all  time  low  with  these  two  incidents.

World  leaders  have  been  trying  to  prevent  North  Korea  from  developing  nuclear

weapons  but  they  have  not  been  successful.  North  Korea  has  the  full  potential  to

develop  nuclear  warheads  and  the  nation  has  become  more  belligerent  recently.

However,  that  does  not  mean  that  world  leaders  cannot  do  anything.  International

pressure  can  keep  North  Korea  from  further  doing  damage  to  neighboring  nations.

Kim  6

Recently,  Russia  has  even  begun  to  condemn  some  of  North  Korea’s  actions.  Russia

which  was  historically  North  Korea’s  ally  has  become  more  hostile  due  to  the  radical

policies  North  Korea  has  been  implementing.  (Charles  Hauss)  Economic  barriers  and

reduction  in  aid  can  prove  incentives  for  North  Korea  to  become  more  open  and

develop  a  better  relationship  with  South  Korea.  If  China  and  Iran  and  other  North

Korean  allies  start  to  put  pressure  on  the  nation,  then  North  Korea  will  have  no  choice

but  to  yield  to  the  international  pressure.  Therefore,  world  leaders  should  be  more

active  in  urging  nations  to  go  against  the  aggression  of  North  Korea.
