Lab Work Project_UME505

Course Code: UME505 Course Title: Manufacturing Technology
Session: July – Dec 2020 Groups: MEE1 to MEE9
Weightage: 10 Marks: 20

Instructors: Dr V K Singla, Dr. Vineet Srivastava, Dr Dinesh W Rathod

Important Instructions for the Project:

 The Lab Class will remain continued on the scheduled time for progress monitoring of the
projects and specifically for handling the queries of students.
 Every student needs to make his project individually, no group project allowed. He/She can
select any one project only for the project submission.
 Project needs to be fabricated according to the availability of resources at your home and
suggested to make from any one of the following domains. The component fabrication is
expected with description of fundamentals while fabricating it. The basic things need to be
elaborated while making the project.

o Casting: Use of wax or candle wax as pouring material. Wheat flour or fine sand can
be used for preparation of mould. The size of component needs to be within 50x50x50
mm and students can select any basic shape or artefact, toy or any decorative piece.
Simple and symmetrical component is favourable.

o Soldering: Students are expected to fabricate the square net structure of ~2 mm dia
wire (any material) for length of 100 mm with grid of 100 x 100 mm with spacing of 20
mm. The electric solder with lead soldering wire (available) can be use to fabricate the
shown net structure. All shown solder joint requires to be strong enough and must be
fabricated based on the fundamentals of soldering and brazing.

Schematics of proposed net structure is given at next page.

o Forming: Any component using aluminium foil and the home made die system. End
product fabrication is must in this project. Students can discuss their ideas with their
instructor. Fundamental of forming should be reflected from the project.

o Any other Areas: Students are strongly encouraged for selecting other project that
involves homemade tooling and the fundamental aspects of manufacturing technology
pertaining to the syllabus. Use of additive manufacturing using homemade or household
equipments is strongly encouraged. Students can discuss their project with instructor
before the actual fabrication for smooth conduct of the activity with evaluation domain.

Procedure for Project Submission:

 Students need to record the video of component fabrication using audio for basics and
fundamental explanation.
 Students can edit their video for making actual fabrication for 3-5 minutes only.
 Students are expected to make a PPT presentation for explanation of video and related
processes by embedding the video in ppt.
 Students must have to show the final component and its picture in the ppt.
 Using Zoom or any other platform they need to record their video with proper video and
voice clarity.
 Video editor (windows tool) can be used to edit the video for making the final video length
of 5-7 minutes only. Students those who will not stick to this mandatory requirement
would be charged with penalty in evaluation.
Contd.....
 Final video size should be restricted to the 100 mb only.
 Students can use other means for recording of video and editing of the same. (Zoom and
Windows tool are not mandatory).
 The video of 5-7 mins with <100 mb size and one image (jpeg) of final component (less
than 5 mb size) required to be uploaded on project submission link. One video and one
image file (total 02) files will be required to submit.

Evaluation pattern and important dates:

 The evaluation of the project will be based on the technical soundness of the project.
It includes the idea, fabrication process, technical knowledge and detailing. However,
25-30% marks will also be reserved for the video graphic and sound quality.

 Students will have to face the viva on the project if required based on the project activity
and that too will carry marks in total of 20 marks.

 The final date of project submission will be 8th November 2020. No further extension
will be allowed.
