Exercise #1 – Features and Benefits of Post-Secondary Options

Directions: ​Use this worksheet to add notes about the features, benefits, and other considerations
pertaining to the post-secondary options presented. Add any questions you still have regarding the option
in the last column.

Post-Secondary Education Features/Benefits/Considerations Questions I Have

4-year College or University - Breadth of education, broader college experience, smoother


transitions and independent living.

2-year College or University- Lower tuition & fees, Lower living Costs, Greater Flexibility, Easier to
Work, and More Support.

Military- Offers money in education, comprehensive health-care, generous vacation times, family
services/supports groups, and special pay or allowances to pay for living costs.

ROTC- Provides leadership developments, team-building, and networking opportunities.

Post-Secondary Education Features/Benefits/Considerations Questions I Have

Service Academy- Students pay no while at a service academy, but required to serve in the military
after you graduate.​ ​Cadets and midshipmen will receive a small stipend while attending an academy
as well as free room and board.

Officer Training School-Attend a senior military college or service academy. Enroll at a traditional
college or university with a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. Attend Officer
Candidate School (OCS) after graduating from college. Receive a direct commission after earning
a professional degree. Finally you can also advance through the enlisted ranks and then complete
officer training.

Peace Corps-​The Peace Corps can open doors to graduate school. Volunteers receive a living stipend,
complete health-care coverage, and a readjustment allowance when they depart service. They may also
be eligible for student loan.
AmeriCorps- You can gain a living allowance, Professional Development Training,
Non-Competitive Eligibility, and an end of Service Award.
