Terminologies (Lecture)
Nutrition: Is a vital component to over all
wellness and health. Is the study of food in
relation to health.
Digestion: It is a mechanical and chemical
breakdown of food into smaller components
Food: is any substance when ingested or
eaten nourishes the body.
Assimilation: describes the act of taking
something in and absorbing it fully. It is the
movement of digested food molecules into
the cells of the body where they are used
Nutrients: is a chemical component needed
by the body to provide energy to build and
repair tissues and to regulate life process.
Digestive enzymes : are proteins that break
down larger molecules like fats, proteins and
carbs into smaller molecules that are easier to
absorb across the small intestine.
3 groups of digestive enzyme
-Amylase( Carbohydrate splitters)
-Lipase- (Fat splitters)
-Proteases-(protein splitter)
Dietetics: is a field of science that determines
how nutrition and good eating affect our
overall health. While this field offers a strong
focus on public health, its main purpose is to
educate everyone on the importance of
making proper and smart dietary choices.
Emulsifications: is the process by which a
system comprising of two immiscible liquids
one of which is dispersed as small droplets
within the other, is produced.
Metabolism : is a chemical process of
transforming foods into other substance to
sustain life.
Synthetic nutrients: are dietary
supplements made artificially in a laboratory
setting or industrial process.
Anabolisim: processes work together in all
living organisms to do things like produce
energy and repair cells.It requires energy to
grow and build metabolic.
Pseudovitamins: is a nonlegitimate term
used to refer to any molecule that is not an
essential vitamin or mineral yet is similarly
vital in the body.
Catabolism: Is a processes work together in
all living organisms to do things like produce
energy and repair cells. It uses energy to
break down.
Malnutrition: It is the condition of the body
resulting from a lack of one or more
essential nutrients or due to excessive
nutrient supply.
Calorie: Fuel potential in a food. One calorie
represents the amount of heat required to
raise one liter of water one degree Celsius.
Classification of nutrients: macronutrients
and micronutrients
Macronutrients: which are required in large
amounts, include carbohydrates, proteins
and fats. 
Micronutrients: are required in small
amounts and include vitamins and minerals. 
Nutriture:  bodily condition with respect to
nutrition and especially with respect to a given
nutrient (as zinc)
