 Answer one full question from each unit.

UNIT – I
1. a) Define Air pollution. Explain different classification of air pollutants. CO1 (10)
b) Describe any two air pollution episodes. CO1 (10)

2. a) Discuss the sources and effects of the following air pollutants CO1 (10)
(i) Particulate matter.
(ii) Sulphur di oxide.
(iii) Carbon mono oxide.
(iv) Oxides of nitrogen.
(v) Photo chemical oxidants.
b) A thermal power plant burns coal at a rate of 500kg/hour. The coal CO1 (10)
contains 3% of Sulphur and 40% of Carbon. Estimate the emission of
Sulphur-di-oxide and Carbon-di-oxide in tons per year. Given molecular
weight of Carbon as 12, Oxygen as 16 and Sulphur as 32.

UNIT – II
3. a) Explain the effect of different air pollutants on plants. CO2 (10)
b) Demonstrate the different atmospheric stability conditions with lapse rates. CO2 (10)

4. a) Describe radiation and subsidence type of inversions with diagrams. CO2 (10)
b) Discuss the effect of wind and its velocity in dispersion of air pollutants. CO2 (10)
Describe the method of plotting of wind rose diagram and uses of wind
rose diagrams in air pollution studies.

UNIT-III
5. a) Sketch a sampling train and describe it’s working. CO3 (10)
b) Discuss Basic considerations for sampling. Describe the need for isokinetic CO3 (10)
sampling.

6. a) Describe the methods of sampling of particulate matter and gaseous CO3 (10)
pollutants from ambient air using high volume air sampler.
b) Discuss the precautions to be taken while sampling particulate matter and CO3 (10)
gaseous pollutants from a stack.

UNIT-IV
7. a) Discuss different types of air pollution control devices used in the industry. CO4 (10)
Indicate the suitability of each of the devices with merits and demerits.
b) Demonstrate the use of cyclones with a representative sketch. CO4 (10)

UNIT-V

10. a) Demonstrate the working of a packed scrubbers and mechanical scrubbers. CO5 (10)
b) With sketch explain the suitability and working of adsorption devices in CO5 (10)
gaseous air pollutant control. Discuss different adoption materials used.
