Tutorial 1

1. Give the definition of matter and explain the three states of matter.

2. Write the SI unit for the following quantity. Identify their equivalent units.

a) Force b) Temperature
c) Energy / heat d) Speed
e) Pressure f) Volume
g) Time h) Mass

3. Discuss in details about Boyle’s Law, Charles’ Law and Avogadro’s Law. Relate the laws with

4. A sample of fluorine gas occupies a volume of 435.25 cm3 at 22°C and 0.96 atm. Determine
volume of the gas if the pressure is increased to 2.86 atm at the same temperature.

5. A sample of NH3 gas occupies 250 cm3 at 350 K. Determine the temperature (in degree
Celsius) when the volume was doubled under the same pressure.

6. Describe in details about S.T.P. and S.A.T.P.

7. Calculate the volume (at S.T.P. and S.A.T.P) occupied by the following gases.
a) 380 mg of xenon gas b) 2.14 mol of nitrogen gas

8. The volume of a sample of gas at 25°C and 101 kPa is 4.45 dm3. Calculate the volume at 58°C
and 225 kPa.

9. State the Dalton’s law of partial pressure. Explain how this law is related to mole fraction.

10. A container of volume 35 dm3 contains 0.84 mol of oxygen and 2.2 mol of carbon dioxide
under a total pressure of 115 kPa. Calculate the partial pressure of each gas in the mixture.

11. About 2.50 dm3 of gas A at a pressure of 7.5 atm and 1.20 dm3 of gas B at a pressure of 2.5
atm were forced into a container of 0.75 dm3 capacity. Calculate the total pressure occupied
in the container, assuming the temperature remains constant throughout.

12. Calculate the volume of 153.5 g of mercury vapor at 554°C and 0.65 atm. (MW = 200.6 g/mol)

13. A 12.4 L cylinder contains 785.5 g of ethane gas at 22.5°C. Determine the amount of the gas
(in gram) that must be released to reduce the pressure to 19.2 atm, assuming it is an ideal
gas.

14. State the Van der Waals equation for real gas. Why this equation is important for a real gas
but not for an ideal gas? Define constant “a” and “b”.

15. Compare pressure that would be exerted by 35.5 g of neon gas which placed in a 1.75 L vessel
at 38°C if it is behaved as a perfect gas and Van der Waals gas.
(Given : Ne = 20.18 g/mol, a = 0.205 atm L2/mol2, b = 1.67 x 10-2 L/mol)
