Welcome to the English 8 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Analyzing Message
Conveyed in a Text.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by public educators to
assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in
schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

This module is designed and written to help you, young learners learn better
the English language. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
levels of learners. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
learning competencies for Grade 8 learners.

The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) covered in this module is


recognize positive and negative messages conveyed in a text.

expressing own opinions. As you go further in this module, you will encounter the
different words and expressions that convey positive and negative messages. .

The different activities will help you analyze the messages conveyed in a text.
Let us start the activity by analyzing whether the paragraph conveys a positive
or negative message. On the space provided after each number, draw a happy face

if the paragraph conveys a positive message and a sad face if the


paragraph conveys a negative message.

negative messages. Take note of the words and expressions used.

I realize the importance of studying. I also appreciate the


fact that I have the chance to get a good education which some
Filipinos cannot even afford. I understand that studying is my

 As a whole, what is the overall message of the text? Is it negative or
positive?

Look closely into the statements. The line “I also appreciate the fact…,”
conveys a positive message. The word appreciate expresses gratitude.
On the other hand, the expression cannot in the statement, “...good
education which some Filipinos cannot even afford,” conveys a negative message.
The word cannot expresses negation.
As a whole, the text conveys a positive message because it shows the
importance of studying and taking responsibility in one’s studies in order to become
a responsible teenager.

A haiku is a type of Japanese poem which consist of three lines. Every line
