THE TEACHING PROFESSION (ProfEd F/TC 2)

First Semester S.Y. 2020-2021
Module 2
Unit 1 – NATURE OF TEACHING AND THE TEACHER ROLE
A. WHAT IS TEACHING? B. THE ROLES OF A TEACHER

I. Introduction/Rationale
In its broadest sense, teaching is a process that facilitates learning. Teaching is the specialized
application of knowledge, skills and attributes designed to provide unique service to meet the educational needs
of the individual and of society. The choice of learning activities whereby the goals of education are realized in
the school is the responsibility of the teaching profession. In addition to providing students with learning
opportunities to meet curriculum outcomes, teaching emphasizes the development of values and guides students
in their social relationships. Teachers employ practices that develop positive self-concept in students. Although
the work of teachers typically takes place in a classroom setting, the direct interaction between teacher and
student is the single most important element in teaching. Your current beliefs, motivations, and goals will shape
what you learn as you interact with this text. Children play school, spend many years as students in classrooms,
and encounter countless media images of teachers. As a result, by the time we reach adulthood, it is tempting to
believe that we know all there is to know about teaching. However, our earlier experiences with teaching may
not provide accurate information that helps us to teach well. What is teaching? How is it different from other
things people do? How does one teach well?
Teachers have the power to make one’s experience meaningful for a large chunks of student’s life the
students play the role of a learner. “A learner must know how to think, behave, speak and treat others as well as
himself during an incredibly influential time in his development. The learners continue to absorb information
about the environment, his identity and his peers outside the school. However, at what point, if at all, can the
learner begin to internalize his teacher’s principles as he continues to mature.
An effective teaching strategy to facilitate moral development does not always to be in classroom, but
through school activities. Character and moral formation also begin with a caring relationship and teachers
create a basis for students through their teaching styles. A child who feels cared for is more likely to care about
others and engage as a moral citizen of his or her community.
