REFLECTION ESSAY
Test and assessment are used interchangeably, but they do mean something different. A test is
a “product” that measures a particular behavior or set of objectives. Meanwhile assessment is
seen as a procedure instead of a product. Assessment is used during and after the instruction
has taken place. The primary purpose of assessment is to improve students’ learning and
teachers’ teaching as both respond to the information it provides. Assessment for learning is an
ongoing process that arises out of the interaction between teaching and learning.
Among the academic level, graduation level is the most crucial period for the learner’s
academic period. We were the student of BA (Hon’s) in English at DELL. We were assessed by
many formal and informal assessments. Formal assessments are typically standardized, scored,
and used to compare students. They are usually the assessments used to determine a student's
grade in a course. Examples of formal assessments include quizzes, assignments, and projects.
In the first semester as a beginner we were asked to do assignments on different courses and
also had to make a project. This really helped us a lot to get attached with the courses.
Moreover it gives much pleasure to do something along with the formal tests. Later from the
fifth semester assignment was not eligible anymore as many of the students us to copy the
information from the web and write it down in the assignment. After undertaking this measure
we also thought of it and found that quiz test is far better than it.
On the other hand informal assessment is defined as a procedure for obtaining information
that can be used to make judgments about a student’s progress. Informal assessment includes
presentation, experiments portfolios, asking question during class. During completing the BA I
really feel that our teachers really helped us a lot to make us attentive towards the class. In
DELL almost in every course we had to do presentation on various topics. Sometimes we did
this presentation in a group or individually. Teachers used to assess our way of presenting the
topic, performance and competency of speaking. Presentation was the best part to present our
self toward everyone in DELL. It really works out to breakdown the fear of a student. In this
case the teachers should also have to maintain the friendly environment with the students so
that it becomes easier for them to present a presentation. The other one is asking questions
during the class really works well. Many of our course instructors used to do this. This helps to
make the students engaged with the study and making more attentive and alert.
Besides, all the teachers of DELL are really friendly while taking us about the issues we were
facing in the courses. Almost every teacher used to give us feedback which was really a
blessing. This is the thing which a student really needed. It is the feedback which helped us to
improve ourselves.
Last but not least I would conclude that DELL has taught a lot of thing. From the very beginning
like a plant our teacher has grown-up us as a fruitful tree with lots of care.
