LOCATION
Absolute Location: 35.6895° N, 139.6917° E
Relative Location: Southeast of Japan; Northwest of Tokyo Bay

PLACE
Physical Characteristics
- 3 rivers: Sumida River, Ara River, Edo River
-Climate: mild (4 seasons, temperate and subtropical)
- Mountainous areas in west of Tokyo (Musashino Plateau)
- Located near where a continental and oceanic plate come together
(experiences earthquakes and typhoons)
Human Characteristics
-Language - Japanese
-Religion a combination of Shintoism and Buddhism (many people have
shrines in their homes) - a tradition is to wash your hands at Shrines as a
cleansing ritual
-Democratic constitutional monarchy
-Traditional Japanese clothes - kimonos, yukatas, etc.
-Traditional arts - origami (folding paper), ukiyo-e(woodblock printing), etc.

REGION
-Part of the Kanto region
-Formal region - Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and is
made up of 23 wards (divisions of the city)
-Functional region - it is a metropolitan area, where many
people work and where many commercial buildings are
-One of most populated cities in the world (approximately
38 million residents)

INTERFACE (HUMAN-
ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION)
-Many skyscrapers, industries, restaurants, and shopping
areas built to support their growing population
-Pollution (air quality, littering, etc.)
-Invention of sushi (abundance of fish)
-Invention of the electric rice cooker (rice is an important
staple in many households)

MOVEMENT
Vehicles; cars, busses, scooters/motorcycles
Trains; have one of fastest in the world the “Shinkansen”
Boat; port of Tokyo (one of the largest Japanese seaports)
Ideas; a very innovative city especially for new technology,
also known for Anime, Manga, Video games, etc.
Resources; has one of the biggest fish industries, forestry,
agriculture and minerals play a smaller part
