Rain Gauge

TASK: Design and create a rain gauge so you can measure

and record how much rainfall there is over a week.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS:
Plastic water bottle
Tape
Scissors
Ruler
Marker
Pebbles/small rocks

SPECIFICATIONS: You are required to work in groups of 2-3 although each person will construct
their own rain gauge. You can use the suggested materials or any other materials. Your rain
gauge must include measurements in centimetres (cm). You will need to work through the
technology process

GENERATING AND DESIGNING:

As a group decide on the materials and sketch a design. Write on your sketch what materials
you would use and why you would use these materials.

PRODUCING AND IMPLEMENTING:

Each person will make their own rain gauge and test it by placing it outside where it can collect
rainfall for 1 week. You need to measure each day how much rainfall there is and record it in
your science journal.

EVALUATING:
The evaluation of the rain gauge and a summary of your data will be in the form of a 2 minute
oral presentation to your peers in small groups.

THE PRESENTATION NEEDS TO COVER THE FOLLOWING:

Display the rain gauge and give an explanation of what it is and how it is used
An explanation of how it was made and any changes that were made and why
An explanation of the data that was recorded
A reflection on the success of the rain gauge in terms of its function
