A Module on Developing Listening Skill

________________________________________________________________________

Prepared by: Elpedes, Jinky P.

I. Introduction

A. This module is primarily designed to the sophomore elementary major students

of the College of Development Education, who served as our respondents for this

study. This will serve as their guide to suffice their needs in developing the four

macroskills specifically in Listening.

B. Rationale:

Listening skill is important in every communication situation. Whether you are

listening to a teacher in class or to several people in a debate or in a TV program, you

need to give the speaker your undivided attention to understand the information you

hear. Once you understand the literal or exact message the speaker gives, you can then

interpret and evaluate what you hear (Grammar Composition, Prentice Hall, p.882)

This module introduces activities for the development of your listening skills.

C. Below are the objectives for this adjunct learning module. Before you can proceed to

the pre-test or pre-assessment stage, read the objectives carefully:

C. General Objective-

By the end of this module, you (students) will be able to develop your listening skills.
Specific Objectives:

1. Listen attentively to a conversation.

2. Supply a certain listening conversation with the missing words based from audio job

ACTIVITY FRAMES

ACTIVITY1.

Work with a partner on this exercise. One of you should read the first paragraph aloud.

The other listens for main idea and major details, writing them down after the reading

is completed.

1. Different people relax in different ways. Some people like to listen to music. Others

find that reading a book or watching television helps them relax. These activities have

one thing in common: They take a person’s mind off the problems and hassles by

focusing attention on the activity itself. Anything you do that takes you away a while

can be relaxing. Other ways to relax include meditation, progressive relaxation, body

scanning, autogenic training, and imagery, laughing, and crying.

Questions:

a) What makes the relaxing activities common?

b) How do people relax as mentioned in the passage, aside from your answers in

number 1.?

Activity 2

Learn to take mental and written notes on main ideas and major details as you listen.

Here are the steps that will help you listen for main and major ideas:

LISTENING FOR MAIN IDEAS

Listen carefully to the beginning statements of the speaker and to the points the

speaker emphasizes, repeats, and enumerates.

Visualize the main ideas. Restate them in your words.

Decide whether the speaker’s examples, definitions, facts, and statistics support the

main ideas you have in mind.

LISTENING FOR MAJOR DETAILS

As you listen, ask yourself what makes each idea true. Keep the details that answer

that question in mind.

Try to predict details the speaker will mention.

Try to link the main ideas and support details into some sort of visual pattern.

Task: The teacher will read the short passage and the students shall listen to get the

minor and main ideas.

Remember, if something is worth doing, it is worth doing correctly. That said, the key

to making perfect cookies is merely a matter of preparation and precision. To begin

with, read your cookie recipe thoroughly before baking. Make sure that you have all of

the necessary ingredients before you continue. Next, use good tools and utensils.

Sometimes, the craftsperson is only as good as his or her tools. By using good tools you

can minimize mistakes and improve the quality of your product. Lastly, you should

use top quality ingredients. Unlike in the fairytales, you can’t turn lead into gold. If

you use poor quality materials, you’ll create an inferior product. So, to make perfect

cookies you should use the highest quality materials available. Bon apatite!

Questions:

1. What are the two P’s, which are keys in making perfect cookies?

2. Enumerate the ways in baking cookies?

3. What does the short passage tells us?

ACTIVITY 3. NOTE TAKING

Look for a sample speech in the internet. Listen to the tape record of the piece you chose

and jot down notes on the main ideas and major details as you listen. Replay the tape

recording to check your accuracy of note taking.

Questions:

1. Who is delivering the speech?

2. What is his/her purpose?

3. What do you think are the feelings/emotions of the speaker while delivering the

speech?

4. For whom does the speaker dedicate his/her speech?

5. What is the message of the speech all about?
