Introduction
The study of Life Science involves different disciplines. It is connected with one
another as a science through the unifying themes that was being called by the
biologists. In this module it will emphasize the aspects that unify these themes that
comprise and serve as the basis of study of Life Science/Biology. It will also cover its
connections among living things and its environment. Different activities were prepared
to clarify the concepts.

10. Biology and Society

1. - A biological system is a group of entities or organs that work together to carry

out a particular task.
- It is a biological unit of the body of an organism. In higher forms of organisms
such as vertebrates (including humans), the biological systems include integumentary
system, lymphatic system, muscular system, nervous system, reproductive
system , respiratory system, skeletal system, endocrine system, immune system,
and urinary system.
- But these living organisms cannot be treated separately from the abiotic or
non-living factors: light, temperature, water, pH and salinity, both operating in such a
system.
2. - All living organisms are made up of cells.
- Cells are the basic unit of life.
3. - Living things cannot sustain life alone; many organisms are living together,
connected in one living system.
- Each living organisms interacts continuously with its environment.
4. - Energy is the ability to do activities of daily living.
- Living organisms perform different tasks that require movement. In doing these
tasks, they use energy either physically or physiologically.
5. - The structures and functions are correlated at all levels of biological
organizations.
- The form-fits-function theme also extends down to the cellular level. For
example, birds have long extensions of nerve cells that control their flight muscles.
6. - The continuity of life is based on heritable information in the form of DNA.
- The passing of characteristics or traits from parents to offspring is called
heredity and is ensured through reproducing sexually or asexually
7. - Feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems.
- One example of this is the sweating, it regulates the body’s temperature. Once
the temperature is regulated, sweating will stop.
8. - All living organisms adapt to their environment in order to survive. Adaptation is
any response towards a stimulus that helps in the survival of an organism.
9. - Evolution refers to a change in a population of living organism over a time. It is
a continuous process in which change is constant and creation of new life forms
happens.
10. - Biology is the science that deals with the study of structures, functions,
and relationships of living things and their environment. This field is changing the
lives of all organisms through research. Advanced studies gave rise to
