Course Description

This course is designed to improve students reading skill in a variety of contexts. Students will learn such
strategies as listening for main idea and details, predicting content, dealing with distractions, and using
context clues to understand what they hear. In addition, students will gain a better understanding of
grammar and improve their ability to write clearly and purposefully. It increases competency in standard
written English, with focus on advanced grammar and writing techniques.

Course Objective

This course aims to build students reading skill and listening, as well as multi-drafting process approach,
which prepare students for writing academic work in English, and to improve grammar proficiency through
examination of major sentence patterns and grammatical forms.

Students will be able to take notes and make use of them in answering questions about passage.
Students will be able to distinguish relevant and irrelevant information.
Students will be able to identify the topic and main idea.
Students will be able to interpret speaker’s tone and attitude.

Students will be able to write formally and informally.
Students will be able to answer information and grammatical questions.

Skills Development

Students are taught to develop their skills in:

Listening Includes

 General comprehension (listening for gist, listening for detailed information, evaluating the
importance of information).
 Lectures (identifying the topic and main themes, identifying relationships among major ideas,
comprehending key information).

Teaching Method

Classroom observations, lecture and demonstration of various classroom approaches, observation and
analysis of videotaped lessons, creation and demonstration of model lessons and activities, discussion and
presentation of specific writings.

Means of Assessment

1. Complete assigned skill-development tasks to a specified level of accuracy. These could include:
 Prepare assigned listening; highlight and make written notes on the included listening.
 Complete grammar exercises

 Paraphrase listening exercises
2. Write assignments that meet the audio instructor specified criteria, organization, language use and
accuracy, and format.
 To make informal notes that summarizes ideas and information used as source material in class.
 To make at least one formal summary of a selected listening comprehension used as source
material.
 To be able to write a well formed sentences on (cause/effect and comparison/contrast).

Course Policies

a) Attendance Policy: Attendance, promptness, and participation are essential to success in university
courses. The general attendance policy of the university states that students must be present for at least 90
percent of scheduled class meetings in order to receive credit for the course; thus, students who miss more
than 10 percent of class meetings may fail the course, or they may be asked to drop the course if lack of
seriousness is demonstrated.
b) Academic Dishonesty: Any student found engaging in an act of academic dishonesty will be promptly
dismissed from the course with a grade (F). Academic dishonesty includes the following: Plagiarism--
presenting someone else's words or ideas as your own.
Collusion--allowing other people to write, to revise, or to alter significantly the text of a paper that is
supposed to be your own work.
