A descriptive review of the information collected on the main impacts of coal mining is
presented, which was organized and developed in two titles; initially, emphasis was placed on
the main influencing factors of coal mining that give rise to pollution, such as the
characterization of mining wastewater, composition of the gases emitted and land transformation
activities. Subsequently, the impacts that these factors cause on water resources, soil, air and
human health are presented. The methodology is based firstly on the search for the scientific
articles provided by the databases (Scopus, Science Direct), then, the selection was made of the
most consistent with the search criteria and finally the most outstanding contributions of each
were objectively highlighted one. The results reported that the geomorphology of the territory,
whether in an open-pit or underground mine, contributes to the infiltration of waters loaded with
polluting substances from mining work and to the subsequent contamination of surface and
groundwater mantles, these liquid residues also They are responsible for promoting soil erosion
and infertility as well as the incidence that the activities of the mineral extraction process
(excavation, removal and mobilization of material) have on the alteration of soil properties,
finally it was found that the Typical atmospheric emissions from this mining favor climate
change and affect both the health of miners and the inhabitants of neighboring communities.
