For DBS3900 LampSite in indoor coverage scenarios, the base station comprises
functional modules (such as the baseband unit (BBU), RRU HUB (RHUB), and Pico
Remote Radio Unit (pRRU)) and auxiliary equipment (such as the external antenna of
the pRRU and Extender). These modules can be flexibly combined to meet different
scenario requirements.
The BBU can be configured with baseband boards at different modes to meet
requirements of different scenarios. The pRRUs can be configured with RF cards of
different RATs so that it can work in different modes.
Currently, RHUB in LampSite networking cannot share the BBU with the RF modules
of macro base stations.
Cables of Category 5e (enhanced) or higher specification are used to connect the
RHUBs and pRRUs.
UMTS BBU + RHUB For the BBU3900, only the baseband processing unit in slot 2
+ LTE or 3 on the BBU can provide CPRI ports. For the BBU3910 or
FDD BBU5900, the baseband processing unit in any of slot 0 to 5
can provide the CPRI port.
One WBBPf/UBBPd board and LBBPd/UBBPd board must be
installed in slots 2 and 3 of the BBU respectively. For example,
if one WBBPf/UBBPd board is configured in slot 2, one
LBBPd/UBBPd board must be configured in slot 3; if one
LBBPd/UBBPd board is configured in slot 3, one
WBBPf/UBBPd board must be configured in slot 2.
If the BBU works in dual mode, only the baseband processing
unit of one mode (either WBBPf/UBBPd or LBBPd/UBBPd)
can provide CPRI ports. A single BBU can provide 6
UMTS+LTE FDD CPRI ports at most.
If the BBU is configured with different baseband processing
units, the UBBPd board preferentially provides the CPRI port.
RHUB + In RHUB cascade scenarios, the CPRI0 or CPRI1 port on one
RHUB RHUB is connected to the CPRI1 or CPRI0 port on the next-
level RHUB.
A maximum of four RHUBs can be cascaded. If two RHUBs are cascaded, above
figure shows the connections among the BBU, RHUBs, and pRRUs in UMTS, LTE, or
UMTS+LTE FDD mode. Connections among the BBU, RHUBs, and pRRUs are also
the same for three- or four-level RHUB cascading.
The maximum distance from the BBU to the lowest-level RHUB3908 is 10 km. The
maximum distance between two RHUB3908s is 6 km.
With the internal PoE module providing power, the distance of the two devices
extends up to 100 m, or 200 m if an Extender is installed.
UMTS networking
One RHUB supports a maximum of two independent sector equipment
groups, and each sector equipment group supports two continuous UMTS
carriers or one independent UMTS carrier.
One BBU supports a maximum of 24 RHUBs.
One BBU supports a maximum of 96 pRRUs.
A cell can be served by a maximum of 96 pRRUs concurrently.
Four-level RHUB cascading is supported on a CPRI link, and the RF
combining for a maximum of 16 pRRUs is supported on this link.
LTE networking
One RHUB supports a maximum of four independent sector equipment
groups, and each sector equipment group supports only one cell.
For LTE
cells, one RHUB can serve two LTE cells which are also served by another
RHUB.
The BBU can have BBU3900, BBU3910 and BBU5900. Unless otherwise specified, the
BBU refers to both the BBU3900, BBU3910 and BBU5900 in this course
The BBU is a baseband processing unit and centrally manages the entire base station.
The BBU provides the following functions:
Provides ports for connecting to the transmission equipment, RF modules, USB
devicesa, external reference clock, and LMT or U2000 to transmit signals, perform
automatic software upgrade, receive reference clock, and support BBU
maintenance on the LMT or U2000.
Manages the entire base station system. The management involves the processing
of uplink and downlink data, signaling processing, resource management, and
operation and maintenance.
BBUs are classified into three types: BBU3900, BBU3910 and BBU5900. With a case
structure, BBUs can house different types of boards and modules.

Optical fibers or an optical distribution frame (ODF) can be used for the connection
between a BBU and an RHUB or two RHUBs. The maximum distance between a
BBU and an RHUB must within 10 km.
When an ODF is not used, a single-mode optical fiber with a maximum length of 150
m can be used to connect a BBU and an RHUB or cascade two RHUBs.
When an ODF is used, only a single-mode optical fiber can be used for connection
and its single-mode pigtail with a maximum length of 20 m interconnects the trunk
single-mode fiber optical cable through the ODF.
CPRI optical fibers must be connected to the CPRI port on the optical module.
If the ODF is used to connect a BBU, or an RHUB, one end of the single-mode CPRI
optical fiber is the DLC connector, and the other end is the FC connector, SC
connector, or the LC connector.

The pRRU3902 works as a remote radio unit to process radio frequency signals. The
pRRU3902 supports the following functions:
The transmit channel receives the baseband signals from the BBU and
performs digital-to-analog conversion. The baseband signals are up-converted
using the zero IF technology to the transmit frequency band and then sent to
the antenna for transmission after being filtered and amplified.
The receive channel receives the radio frequency signals from the antenna.
Then, the radio frequency signals are down-converted to baseband signals
and sent to the BBU for processing after being filtered and amplified.
The CPRI data can be transmitted using the Ethernet cable.
The built-in or external antennas is supported.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is supported.
