THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD
Learner’s Workbook
COLLATED BY:
MA. ABEGAIL F. BUÑAO
This material is intended solely for academic utilization of SFXC students only.
INTRODUCTION
However, you only need to step back a little bit to see that the world
“out there” is already here. For example, you likely have relatives who are
OFW’s. Every time these relatives visit or send something home, they are
bringing part of the world with them. The media and the internet are also
your windows to the contemporary world. You watch Hollywood movies,
sing Kpop songs and even you watch NBA games. Finally, your
consumption habits are global. You have dined in Mcdonalds, owned a
Korean phone, eaten and Australian beef. You are already a citizen of the
world whether you are aware of it or not. Just by living your life, you
automatically think about the contemporary world.
This course will be challenging. Much of the materials you will find are
new and unfamiliar. Despite this, we hope that you will enjoy reading this
book and taking this course. This may be one of the few times in your life
as a college student when you are explicitly challenged to transcend the
borders of you nation, your countrymen, and ultimately, your imagination.

CHAPTER NO. I
INTRODUCTION TO GLOBALIZATION
LESSON TITLE Defining Globalization
Specific During the students' learning engagements, they will be
Learning able to:
Outcomes: • Define and explain globalization by acrostic
activity to express personal understanding about
the concept;
• Identify and explain the varied Globalizations
dimensions and concepts;
• Analyze the observed present local and
international society to look on the existence of
GLOBALIZATION; and
• Enumerate and explain the positive and the
negative aspects of globalization according to the
status quo and by personal observations of the
reality.
Introduction of
the Topic: We see globalization as the growth of the sizes of
social systems and the increase in the complexity of inter-
societal links. Thus, in certain respects, globalization may
be regarded as a process connecting the past, the present,
and the future—as a sort of bridge between the past and
the future. The articles in this book embrace the need to
cover a variety of aspects and dimensions of globalization,
and to see both its local and its global manifestations.
From our perspective, globalization studies imply
research that is not just limited to the most popular
spheres of economic and political globalization, but also
includes the study of global problems such as climatic
change, cultural globalization, and so on.

WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?
the-many-and-contradicting-definitions
Human beings have encountered many changes over the last century
especially in their social relationships and social structures. Of these changes,
one can say that globalization is a very important change, if not, the "most
important" (Bauman 2003). The reality and omnipresence of globalization
make us see ourselves as part of what we refer to as the "global age" (Albrow
1996).
On the other hand, it can be said that some view globalization to be a positive
phenomenon. For instance, Swedish Journalist Thomas Larsson (2001) saw
globalization as "the process of world shrinkage, of distances getting shorter,
things moving closer. It pertains to the increasing ease with which somebody
on one side of the world can interact, to mutual benefit with somebody on the
other side of the world."
On the other hand, some see it as occurring through and with regression,
colonialism, and destabilization.
ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION

POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION
refers to the growth of the worldwide political system, both in size and
complexity. That system includes national governments, their governmental
and intergovernmental organizations as well as government-independent
elements of global civil society such as international non-governmental
organizations and social movement organizations. One of the key aspects of
the political globalization is the declining importance of the nation-state and
the rise of other actors on the political scene. The creation and existence of
the United Nations has been called one of the classic examples of political
globalization.
CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION
refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and values around the world in
such a way as to extend and intensify social relations. This process is marked
by the common consumption of cultures that have been diffused by the
Internet, popular culture media, and international travel. This has added to
processes of commodity exchange and colonization which have a longer
history of carrying cultural meaning around the globe. The circulation of
cultures enables individuals to partake in extended social relations that cross
national and regional borders. The creation and expansion of such social
relations is not merely observed on a material level. Cultural globalization
involves the formation of shared norms and knowledge with which people
associate their individual and collective cultural identities. It brings
increasing interconnectedness among different populations and cultures.
