Purdy is working on a few
hours of sleep.
As he treads across the
muddy ground Monday after-
noon, Purdy watches his crew
haul in loads of amusement
equipment. Behind him, the
Columbus Fairgrounds are
bathed in the setting sun.
Purdy and his crew were
setting up the stage for a four-
day carnival, which will run
on evenings from Wednesday
through Saturday at the fair-
grounds. The event will fea-
ture 20 games and 18 rides
for both adults and children,
and will have six food stands
that sell funnel cakes, cones,
nachos, corn dogs and more.
A Kentucky native grow-
ing up with a family-owned
carnival, Purdy was born
into the funfair business. His
wife, too.
“My wife’s family owned
a carnival, and we met at one
of the fair conventions, and
we were competitors,” Purdy
said.
The fair conventions

open up their own business

In an election year
like no other, the first
debate between Pres-
ident Donald Trump
and his Democratic
challenger, Joe Biden,
could be a pivotal mo-
ment in a race that Trump
has remained stub-
bornly unchanged in
the face of historic
tumult.
The Tuesday night
debate will offer a
massive platform for
Trump and Biden to
outline their starkly Biden
different visions for
a country facing multiple crises, in-
cluding racial justice protests and a
pandemic that has killed more than
200,000 Americans and cost mil-
lions of jobs.
The health emergency has up-
ended the usual trappings of a pres-
idential campaign, lending height-
ened importance to the debate. But
amid intense political polarization,
comparatively few undecided vot-
ers remain, raising questions as to
how, or if, the debate might shape
a race that has been defined by its
bitterness and, at least so far, its
stability.
Biden will step onto the Cleve-
land stage holding leads in the
polls — significant in the national
surveys, closer in the battleground
states — but facing questions about
his turn in the spotlight, particular-
ly considering Trump’s withering
attacks. And Trump, with only 35
days to change the course of the
race, will have arguably his best
chance to try to reframe the cam-
paign as a choice election and not
a referendum over his handling of a
virus that has killed more people in
America than any other nation.
“This will be the first moment in
four years that someone will walk on
stage as co-equal to Trump and be
able to hold him to account for the
malfeasance he has shown leading
the country,” said Steve Schmidt,
senior campaign aide for John Mc-
Cain’s 2008 Republican presidential
bid and a frequent Trump critic. “If
Biden is unable to indict Trump for
all that he has done, (that) would be
profound failure. There is no spin-
ning that away.”
The president’s handling of the
coronavirus will likely dominate
much of the discussion. The pan-
demic’s force will be tangible as the
candidates’ podiums will be spaced
far apart and the traditional open-
ing handshake scrapped.
And the debate could be shaped
by an extraordinary confluence of
other recent moments: the death of
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bad-
er Ginsburg, allowing Trump to
nominate a conservative jurist to
replace a liberal voice and reshape
the high court for generations, and
the blockbuster revelations about
Trump’s long-hidden tax history,
including that he paid only $750 a
year in federal income taxes in 2016
and 2017 and nothing in many other
years.
But the impact of the debate —
or the two that follow in the weeks
ahead — remains unclear.
The tumult of 2020 is difficult to
overstate: COVID-19 has rewritten
the rules of everyday life; schools
and businesses are shuttered; and
racial justice protests have swept
the nation after a series of high-pro-
file killings of Black people by po-
lice.
Despite the upheaval, the pres-
idential race has remained large-
ly unchanged since Biden seized
control of the Democratic field in
March. The nation has soured on
Trump’s handling of the pandem-
ic, and while his base of support
has remained largely unchanged,
he has seen defections among old-
er and female voters, particularly
in the suburbs, and his path to 270

viable, has shrunk.

organizes and meets
outside the purview of a
church and includes peo-
ple from several Christian

Florida police: Friend convinced Trump ex-campaign boss to surrender

officer who was friends
with Parscale convinced
him to surrender, officials
said.

wrote in a report that he
had just finished a shift
Sunday evening when a
mutual friend called him
and told him that a SWAT
team was at Parscale’s
home, and he was refus-
ing to come out. When
Wilson arrived at the
Fort Lauderdale home,
he was able to persuade
Parscale to come outside.
Body camera footage re-
leased Monday shows
officers rushing Parscale
and knocking him to the
ground before taking him
into custody.
The standoff started
earlier Sunday after Par-
scale’s wife fled the home
and asked for help from a
real estate agent showing
a nearby house, officials
said. They called 911, and
officers responded.
The wife told officers
that Parscale had been
stressed out recently and
that he had made com-
ments about shooting
himself, according to a
police report. Investiga-
tors said 10 guns were
later removed from the
home. The wife also said
that Parscale drinks and
suffers from post-trau-
matic stress disorder.
One of the responding
officers reported that he
witnessed bruising on the
wife’s arm and face. She
told him that the injuries
had come from an alter-
cation with Parscale ear-
lier that week, according
to the police report. The
officer called Parscale
and asked him to leave
the house unarmed, but
the report said Parscale
remained in the home
for about an hour, until
Wilson arrived and con-
vinced him to come out-
side.

cases as of Saturday, up
3,495 from the 93,364 cas-
es on Sept. 19. The state
added 3,346 new cases
from Sept. 13 to Sept. 19.
Oktibbeha County saw
51 new cases last week, a
slight decrease from 56
the previous week, and
Clay County had 18 new
cases compared to 34
over the same time frame.
The average weekly
hospitalizations due to
COVID-19 and use of ven-
tilators to treat patients
with the illness have gone
down both locally and
statewide, said Dr. James
Martin, chief medical of-
ficer at Baptist Memorial
Hospital-Golden Trian-
gle.
“(You) should not look
at the number of cases,
since we have such a high
percentage of false posi-
tives,” Martin said.
A source of false posi-
tives is the rapid antigen
test for COVID-19 that is
becoming more available
nationwide. Both Baptist
and the Allegro Family
Clinic in Columbus have
been using rapid tests the
past few weeks.
Allegro Vice Presi-
dent Amy Bogue said the
clinic conducts a regular
COVID-19 test on every
person who tests nega-
tive with a rapid test in

T-shirts commemorating the win
went into production Saturday night and
were in stores by Sunday afternoon, but
there was a run on all sorts of MSU gear.
“We can’t keep anything with a pirate
on the shelf, really,” Gomez said.
The pirate motiff is the unofficial
brand of Leach when he used it as a
metaphor for life in his 2011 biography,
“Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge
in Football and in Life.”
When Leach signed a $5-million-per-
year contract to become MSU’s coach
in January, pirate-themed merchandise
with MSU’s colors and logo became big
sellers.
A second wave of pirate-themed MSU
gear appears to have been ignited with
Saturday’s win, thanks to a video pro-
duced by MSU released Monday morn-
ing.
In that video, Leach, perched atop a
wagon adorned with a large pirate flag
(with MSU’s logo on the eyepatch of
the skull-and-crossbones image), says,
“Looking for a bandwagon? Hop on.”
The video went viral within hours of
its Monday morning release, something
Cheyenne Tucker, who works as a sales
assistant at Campus Bookmart, quickly
discovered.
“We had about 20 of those pirate flags
in stock,” Tucker said. “We would sell
maybe one or two a day. It was the crazi-
est thing. We sold what we had in stock
in maybe an hour-and-a-half and we’ve
got orders probably 250 more just today.
It just came out of nowhere.”
Campus Bookmart manager Stan
Raye said the Bulldogs’ win over LSU

“Home games are always really good
for us, but with 25 percent capacity (for
home game attendance), we knew busi-
ness wouldn’t be like it normally is,”
Raye said. “We haven’t had our first

Bulldog fans play an important role this fall
F
rom a public health
perspective, whether
Mississippi State should
be playing football during the
COVID-19 pandemic remains
a valid question whose full con-
sequences cannot be accurate-
ly determined.
But from a mental health
perspective, football may be
just what the doctor ordered.
Since March, the spectre of
COVID-19 has hovered over
the landscape. In the U.S.
there have been more than
7 million cases and 205,000
deaths. Worldwide, there have
been more than 33 millions
cases with a million dead.
But the effect of the virus
goes beyond those worst
outcomes. Everyone in some
shape, form or fashion has
been affected. It has disrupted
our economy, our lifestyles,
our routines and our attitudes.
COVID-19 fatigue has set
in as we comply with guide-
lines and recommendations
and worry about whether it’s
wise to send our children back
to schools or attend public
events, including church ser-
vices. There is no one whose
life has been altered by the
virus in some way. And it’s
been that way for more than
six months now, with no sure
end in sight.
So, particularly in the
South, where college football
is widely considered one of the
best parts of fall, Saturday’s
opening day of SEC football
was a pleasant diversion, an
escape from the tedium and
worry and all things associat-
ed with the virus.
Before Saturday, the mood
among most MSU fans was
one of curiosity to see how
the team’s new coach, Mike
Leach, would fare. In January,
MSU hired Leach, one of the
most highly-publicized hirings
in college football. Leach’s “air
raid offense” has long defied
conventional wisdom that says
teams must have a balance be-
tween running plays and pass-
es and there was some doubt
about whether his scheme
would work in the SEC, where
football is almost like the mor-
tal combat of trench warfare.
Saturday in Baton Rouge,
MSU fans got a sneak-peak of
what Leach would do at MSU.
It’s fair to say, he exceeded all
expectations. The Bulldogs
passed LSU silly. Stanford
transfer quarterback K.J.
Costello set an SEC record for
passing yards in his first game
in a Bulldog uniform, throw-
ing for 623 yards and five
touchdowns as the Bulldogs
stunned sixth-ranked and
defending national champion
LSU, 44-34.
On Saturday, MSU will play
its first home game and the
excitement is palpable.
For a few hours, we can
forget COVID-19 - but not
entirely.
Attendance will be limited
to 25 percent, about 16,000
fans. It is to those people we
urge caution.
Those who attend Satur-
day’s game should adhere to
the guidelines established,
which means practicing
social distancing and wearing
masks. A crowd of 16,000 can
be a petri dish for COVID-19
if these rules are not faithfully
followed.
If those rules are ignored
the result could be an out-
break that could put a halt to
football almost as quickly as it
begins.
So, if you really love MSU
football, show it by doing your
part.
It would be a real shame
to forfeit the diversion and
entertainment college football
provides because of non-com-
pliance.
MSU is off to a wonderful
start. Bulldog fans should do
their part to keep it going.

What does it really

mean to be pro-life?
S
ome are calling Donald
Trump “the most pro-
life president ever.” He’s
definitely been anti-abortion.
But he’s hardly pro-life.
The “consistent life ethic”
gets closer to the heart of
what this means. Originating
in the Catholic Church, it ex-
pands the pro-life concept to
include opposition to capital
punishment, humane treat-
ment of immigrants and even Froma Harrop
the wearing of face masks
during a pandemic. Trump subscribes to none of the
above.
“Why aren’t all pro-lifers pro-maskers?” writes James
Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor at large of America, a
Jesuit magazine. “This should be a no-brainer.”
He goes on: “Some people think these precautions
are not just inconvenient but an infringement on their
civil liberties. I could give you all sorts of arguments
about all sorts of other public health measures designed
to protect people — food-safety rules, turn signals on
cars and so on — that people seem fine with. But in
these politicized times, even caring for the other person
has become political.”
In the interest of full disclosure, I believe that women
have the right to an early abortion — with later proce-
dures permitted when a pregnancy goes catastrophical-
ly wrong. But I do respect a consistent pro-life position.
From his mocking of those who wear masks to his
disdain for social distancing (himself excepted), Trump
has worsened a health crisis that has claimed 200,000
American lives. He says that he knew from the get-go
that COVID-19 would become a plague but just let it rip.
With just over 4 percent of the world’s population,
the United States has suffered nearly 20 percent of
global coronavirus deaths. The pandemic has been bad
elsewhere, but no rich country has done as little to stem
its damage as we have.
And Trump still downplays it, telling people in Ohio
that the disease “affects elderly people, elderly people
with heart problems and other problems. ... That’s it.”
We see Trump supporters menacing store employees
who tell them to wear masks. To be pro-life should mean
reverencing the life of the checkout clerk as well as the
terminally ill child. And even if these thugs don’t believe
the expert advice on masks, you’d think they’d have the
decency to not harass stressed-out retail workers.
It is intellectually impossible to consider anyone
who would take health insurance away from millions of
Americans as “pro-life.” As we speak, the Trump Justice
Department is supporting a lawsuit before the Supreme
Court that would blow up the Affordable Care Act. Some
20 million Americans would lose coverage as a result.
From 2014 to 2017, the Medicaid expansion part of
the ACA alone saved the lives of at least 19,000 Amer-
icans ages 55 to 64, according to a National Bureau of
Economic Research study. Yet, Trump no longer makes
even a pretense of fixing the ACA, much less offering a
replacement, as he promised in 2016.
A true pro-life stance would also recognize the moral
duty to care for the Creation, a stance many religious
leaders do take. This would extend to concern over the
threat that global warming poses to life on our planet,
including human life.
The National Bureau of Economic Research predicts
that if climate change is left unchecked, higher tem-
peratures could lead to 85 deaths per 100,000 people
globally per year by 2100. Counting from today’s world
population, that comes to a hard-to-imagine half-billion
lives lost.
Trump doesn’t give a rat’s tail about climate change
or health coverage or protecting Americans from a
deadly pandemic. Accusations that he is running a
death cult may sound overheated but are not without
basis.
That’s who Trump is. Americans claiming to be pro-
life should ask whether that’s OK with them.

Stresses value in voting
Voting is so important and as a voter, I urge
everyone to think for themselves.
I have lived in the Philippines years ago, where
during an election, Christians (Catholics) were
beaten at the polls if they did not put down the right
choice. Armed guards stood there and watched.
Thank God this isn’t the case here in America.
I felt compelled to write to you today. You know
God made all men and women of all colors. Every-
one is precious in his sight.
God bless the USA; we really need His blessings
during this chaos.

Concerned over peaceful transfer of power
President Trump, when asked last week if he
would commit to a peaceful transfer of power, said,
“Well, we’re going to have to see…” Meaning, quite
possibly not, and, really, meaning, no, I will only
accept the result if I win. He continued, “I’ve been
complaining very strongly about the ballots and
the ballots are a disaster.” This has been repeated
at several recent rallies, followed by claims he will
only lose if the election has been rigged – by the
Democrats.
Please note Trump has not offered the any
evidence whatsoever for these claims. But he has
the bully pulpit and will repeat the lie because, as
Joseph Goebbels famously said, “If you repeat a
lie often enough, it becomes accepted as truth.”
Trump also said last week, if we can just “get rid of
the ballots, there will be no transition” with all the
undemocratic implications the statement entails.
The peaceful transfer of power has been a
hallmark of our government since George Wash-
ington, most notably when second President, John
Adams, stepped aside in 1801 after becoming the
first incumbent President to lose a re-election bid.
Yet this transition is guaranteed nowhere in the
Constitution. The Presidential Transition Act of
1963 was passed to provide “some” clarity – but also
muddies. It is not clear what would happen if Trump
refused to leave.
I am not the only one concerned about Trump’s
comments. According to Dr. Brendan Nyhan, Pro-
fessor of Government, constitution and government
experts around the world are on “high alert” - that
this is a “5-alarm fire.”
I call on Senate Republicans to follow the lead of
Senator Romney (R-UT) and denounce the Pres-
ident’s suggestion that he will not go peacefully
should Biden win – particularly those up for re-elec-
tion in November.
By that I mean, you:
Thom Tillis, (R-NC);
Corey Gardner, (R-CO);
Susan Collins, (R-ME);
Martha McSally, (R-AZ);
Lindsey Graham, (R-SC);
Kelly Loeffler, (R-GA);
Steve Daines, (R-MT);
Cindy Hyde-Smith, (R-MS).
So far none have.
I worry that a losing Trump will wait to take ad-
vantage of post-Election Day chaos driven by armed
groups in the streets with long guns. Far-fetched? I
don’t think so. Armed groups on both sides such as
NFAC and III’ers have made their presence known
already, in Michigan, Louisville, and Portland.
Citizens, it is rapidly becoming clear that we are
at a significant crossroads for our nation. Will we
still be the nation we have been for over 250 years
once 2024 rolls around? I am not at all sure.

Biden’s gaffes pale in comparison to Trump’s
Patrick Buchanan states in a recent column the
polls show Biden ahead, but the verbal and mental
lapses occurring more frequently have Democrats
nervous about tonight’s debate.
The “gaffes” are pale compared to what Trump
says and does.
Trump has repeatedly belittled the intelligence
of service members, in particular John McCain,
who was a POW for over 5 years, and asked that
wounded veterans be kept out of military parades,
and people have stated that Trump has said that
Americans who died in wars are losers and suckers.
Trump has asked people to vote twice in Novem-
ber. A judge warned this law abiding president it’s
illegal.
Trump states COVID-19 only kills the elderly,
and people with other diseases, adding it affects
virtually nobody.
Trump was slapped down by the electoral com-
mission chief over call to dump mail votes.
In the U.S., we do not get rid of mail ballots, we
count them.
Trump: In January, he states only 15 cases of the
virus, and it will soon be nearly zero. We have it
under control and China is doing a great job with it.
Today, the world has seen over 6 million cases
and over 200,000 deaths.
Trump’s attempt to undermine election results
unnerve the country. If we lose election, Trump
tells rally, we’re not going to stand for it.
Trump has generated over 3,400 conflicts of
interest since entering the White House.
The president supports the QAnon group, which
the FBI calls a domestic terrorist group.
3,500 US companies sue over Trump imposed
Chinese tariffs.
Millions of laid off American workers lack health
insurance.

Martha Ann Wofford Fortner, 81, of Colum-

Martha was born on October 16, 1938, in La-
mar County, AL, to Clarence Lester and Josie Lee
Wofford. She graduated from Lee High School in
1957. On June 1, 1957, she married Billy (“Bill”)
Lee Fortner, and they remained married until
Bill’s death four months before what would have
been their 50th anniversary. Bill was in the U. S.
Air Force, and they were stationed at Eglin Air
Force Base, FL, Bermuda, Biloxi, MS, Taipei,
Taiwan, and finally Columbus.
While Martha worked at JCPenney and at
Town & Country Realty with Bill for a period of
time, her true calling was being a wife, mother
and grandmother, each role fulfilled exception-
ally, lovingly, selflessly and with enthusiasm.
While her family was always her top priority, she
also loved gardening, reading, shopping, sewing
and politics. Martha was also a member of An-
tioch Baptist Church for many years.
She is survived by son, Billy Lee Fortner, Jr.
(Lisa) of Bowling Green, VA, daughter, Sandra
Brock (Steve) of Franklin, TN, grandsons, James
Fortner, Eric Brock and Evan Brock, sister-in-
law, Linda Ann Sumrall (Tom), of Columbus,
MS, and three nieces, Cheryl Noland, Lisa Ivey
(Donnie) and Cynthia Edwards (Bill). She also
leaves Denise Sanders, her wonderful caregiver,
who she loved like a daughter. She is preceded in

and coached girl’s basketball and boy’s golf as
well. He led the girl’s basketball team to the state
title in 1971. He was also active in leadership at
Kennesaw First Baptist Church, as a deacon and
Sunday School teacher. He is survived by his wife
of 48 years, Becky, his son David, daughter-in-
law Katie, grandsons James and Matthew, and
siblings and in-laws Don Harris, Kay and Larry
Wingert, Gail and Ron Cooke, and Lillie and
Heyward Burnette.
Visitation will be from 6-8pm Tuesday at
Winkenhofer Funeral Home in Kennesaw.

Kennesaw First Baptist Church.

eight wild-card series in-

Column: A season like no other gets playoffs like no other

The playoffs are here,
and there’s no better way
to start than by throwing
out the first ball Tuesday
in Minnesota with the
cheating Astros and their
29-31 record.
It’s entirely possible,
if not terribly likely, that
the Astros could suddenly
discover a way to start hit-
ting the ball and make the
World Series once again.
Once there, it’s also pos-
sible they could go up
against the fearsome Mil-
waukee Brewers, a team
that hasn’t cracked the
.500 mark all year.
That, of course, would
mean the best team in
baseball would be gone
before Clayton Kershaw
even had a chance to prop-
erly warm up. It would
also mean the Twins spent
two months scraping and
clawing their way to the
top of the AL Central only
to be sent home for losing
two — count them, two —
games.
Welcome to the play-
offs, 2020 pandemic style.
Don’t get too comfortable,
because by the end of the
week you could be gone.
Like unpredictability?
How does every division
winner potentially getting
knocked out before the
weekend sound?
Enjoy seeing under-
dogs get their shot? Then
you probably don’t live in
Southern California.
About the best thing
that can be said about the
first week of the postsea-
son is this: You’ll be able
to watch a lot of games on
TV.
Sixteen teams. One
knockout round. And they
played a 60-game regular
season for what?
Not much, it turns out.
The best teams do get
home-field advantage for
opening week, though
without fans it hardly mat-
ters. The cardboard cut-
outs at Dodger Stadium
make the same amount of
noise that they do at Mill-
er Park, even if there’s no
statue of Bob Uecker for
them to crowd around.
Other than that, it’s
win two and move on or
lose two and be done.
That’s true whether your
regular season record
was 29-31 in Milwaukee
or 43-17 in Los Angeles.
No, the regular season
wasn’t entirely meaning-
less. It did, after all, some-
how eliminate 14 teams,
though for some reason
the Brewers weren’t one
of them.
``We’re in the playoffs.
That’s how you see it,’’
Brewers manager Craig
Counsell said. ``There’s
no reason to apologize for
getting into the playoffs.’’
Actually, in Milwau-
kee’s case there might be
a reason to say you’re sor-
ry. The Brewers not only
lost more games than they
won, but couldn’t even win
when it mattered most on
the final day of the season
and had to have help from
the Padres just to get in.
Odds are they won’t
beat the loaded Dodgers,
either. If they had been
in the same division,
the Brewers would have
finished a whopping 14
games behind in just a
two-month season.
But strange things can
happen during what could
be just 18 innings of base-
ball at Dodger Stadium.
And that could make the
rest of the playoffs a farce,
something Rob Man-
fred and company likely
feared most when plan-
ning a postseason that pri-
oritized TV revenue over
everything.
To be sure, this might
be the best baseball can
do in the midst of a pan-
demic. For a long time it
looked like there would be
no season at all as players
and management fought
and then COVID-19 had
its say.
Somehow we got two
months of play that, if you
weren’t looking too close,
seemed a lot like baseball
as usual. Even the purists
had some good things to
say about seven-inning
doubleheaders and put-
ting a runner on second
base to start extra in-
nings.
But these playoffs
were not only hastily
conceived, but artificially
inflated. Worse yet, they
give baseball cover to
make expanded playoffs
permanent in the future,
something Manfred said
earlier this month was in
the works.
Still, even if the first
week of the playoffs is
badly flawed, it gets bet-
ter as it goes on. No days
off in the division and
league championship se-
ries means the World Se-
ries will be here before we
know it — and be finished
before the kids put on
their costumes to go out
and trick or treat.
That there will be a
World Series is perhaps
the most important thing
now at a time where noth-
ing is really certain. That
it will happen in October
is an unexpected bonus.
In the end, a lot of
things had to go right for
baseball to even get in a
season. Now it will get a
champion, too.
Who knows, there may
even be a parade in Mil-
waukee to celebrate when
it’s all over.

Lakers, Heat start their preparations for NBA Finals

son’s NBA championship.

at the thought.
What was once a 22-
team bubble at Walt Dis-
ney World is down to the
final two, with Adebayo
and the Miami Heat set to
take on LeBron James and
the Los Angeles Lakers in
the NBA Finals that start
on Wednesday night. It’s
the first finals matchup
between the clubs, with
the Lakers looking for
a record-tying 17th title
and the Heat seeking
their fourth in the last 15
seasons.
“It’s pretty cool con-
sidering, when you really
think about it, it’s you and
one other team that are
still left standing and one
of the two will be raising
the Larry O’Brien Tro-
phy,” Adebayo said Mon-
day. “But we know that
the job isn’t done yet.”
The Heat were spend-
ing much of Monday rest-
ing up before an evening
team meeting would of-
ficially start their finals
preparation process. The
Lakers, who won the
Western Conference fi-
nals on Saturday — a day
before Miami finished off
the Eastern Conference
crown — were starting to
get their game plan in or-
der after a one-day break
as well.
Much like the Heat,
the Lakers took a moment
to enjoy winning the con-
ference title. Winning a
day ahead of Miami just
happens to give the Lak-
ers a bit more time to pre-
pare for Game 1.
“We appropriately had
fun with it that night, en-
joyed it that night. And
then the next day, it’s time
to move on to the next ...
and now it’s all business,”
Lakers coach Frank Vo-
gel said Monday. “I don’t
think there’s any kind of
an eye towards the end of
getting home or anything
like that. It’s really about
staying single-minded
in our focus about what
needs to happen for us to
beat the Miami Heat.”
Both teams are sched-
uled for regular practices
Tuesday. It’s definitely a
tight squeeze, preparation
wise, compared to last
year: the 2019 NBA Finals
started on May 30, with
Golden State clinching
its spot in the title series
on May 20 and Toronto on
May 25.
“I tell you, it’s going to
be brutalizing for our vid-
eo staff,” Heat coach Erik
Spoelstra said.
The Heat, who ousted
East No. 1 seed Milwau-
kee in the second round,
are trying to become the
second team in the last
18 seasons to beat a pair
of No. 1 seeds in the same
playoff. Toronto did it last
year, first to Milwaukee,
then to Golden State. Be-
fore that, one would have
to go back to 2002 when
the Lakers pulled off the
feat.
“I’m full of emotions,”

said. “I’m happy. I’ve been
waiting for this for a long
time, for 11, 12 years, and
finally I’m here. All the
credit goes to those guys
who are believing it and
to my teammates. I’m just
happy. I’ve been through
a lot in those five years,
ups and downs, and I’m
just happy to be here and
to be part of this big mo-
ment. Can’t wait for the
finals.”
The Heat celebrated

Monday morning before
retiring to their rooms for
a few hours of sleep.
Adebayo said he en-
joyed himself — within
reason.

see the finals stage for

when the Lakers face off
against the Miami Heat.

Nothing was simple.
Not this year.
The Lakers are 64-22
this season when adding
up the regular season and
the playoffs, on pace for
the seventh-best record
in franchise history. For
an organization with 16
championships, that’s no
small achievement.
Vogel’s season started
with championship expec-
tations, which are always
accompanied by immense
pressure. He had to navi-
gate his team through a
preseason made rocky by
getting caught in the po-
litical squabble between
China and the NBA — a
mess that flared to a very
ugly level when the Lak-
ers were in China last Oc-
tober. And then came the
devastation on Jan. 26,
when Kobe Bryant died in
a helicopter crash.
“He’s been great.

James said of Vogel. “I
mean, it’s been a crazy ob-
stacle course for our fran-

The painful playoff losses
look like mile markers now —
losing four consecutive games
to Chicago after going up 2-1,
blowing 3-2 series leads in the
Eastern Conference final in
2016 and 2018, and last sea-
son’s jaw-dropping, first-round
sweep by Columbus after the
Lightning had tied the NHL
single-season wins record and
won the Presidents’ Trophy.
Coach Jon Cooper thought
the attitude needed to change
from wanting to beat every
opponent 9-0 because that’s
not realistic in playoff hockey.
His team went 12-3 in one-goal
games this postseason, and he
said the Lightning won be-
cause they were strengthened
by years of “heartbreak.”
Bettman was on hand ex-
actly 200 days after his dismal
if hopeful announcement that
the season was being put on
pause with 189 games left un-
played.
The league and players’
union worked for nearly four
months to iron out where,
how and when to play so 2020
wouldn’t join 1919 and 2004 as
a year in which the Cup wasn’t
awarded. The plan they came
up with was unusual. Like
the NBA, it called for walling
off teams from the public for
months on end. Unlike the
NBA, it called for doing it in
two spots — Toronto and Ed-
monton, while the U.S. grap-
pled with spiking coronavirus
cases in too many places for
NHL leadership to feel com-
fortable.
And it worked. After more
than 31,000 tests, there were
zero positive coronavirus cas-
es reported among players,
coaches and staff inside the
bubbles and just a handful
among hotel, arena or restau-
rant employees. There was
nothing close to a breakout.
Bizarre as it was with no
fans and manufactured crowd
noise and light shows, the
hockey was often top notch.
The expanded, 24-team play-
offs meant there was hockey
nearly every day, sometimes
from midday until past mid-
night, including a five-over-
time marathon that was the
second longest in modern
hockey history. And in this
unprecedented postseason,
there were even two elimina-
tion games on the same day in
the same arena.
By the conference finals,
Rogers Place, a nearby JW
Marriott and the rest of a heav-
ily fenced bubble in downtown
Edmonton became the center
of hockey for fans thousands
of miles away with Dallas and
Tampa Bay, two of the south-
ernmost teams in the league,
settling the Cup in the NHL’s
northernmost arena.
In all, the NHL played 130
games in a bubble, 25 of them
going into overtime, before
the final horn set off a celebra-
tion by Tampa Bay that simply
had to do with no fans in the
stands, and few loved ones al-
lowed on the ice to share the
moment. Unable to hug them,
players embraced each other
and took out their phones to
call and video chat with those
who couldn’t be there.
“We were in the bubble for
this many days away from our
friends and family, our sup-
port systems,” Stamkos said.
“We love each and every per-
son that has helped us and
allowed us to come here and
accomplish our dream.”

and it falling down on its own
and me remembering to put
it back up, I think there were
a number of challenges there.
But, you know, with a little
practice, who knows, it may be
better this week.”
Following his initial answer,
Leach went back and forth
with Blinder over the query.
“See I’ve got this face sock
thing, which is bad,” Leach
said in reference to his neck
gaiter. “It sits right on your
neck instead of hangs from
your ear…Do you ever find
that, you know, and then pretty
soon, you know, those things
will start to smell bad. And
then all of a sudden you’re go-
ing ‘What’s that smell? What’s
going on out there?’ There’s
nothing going on out there.
That’s your breath. I need to
practice with it. But what do
you do when you’re talking?
Did you have a trigger some-
thing to remind you when to
pull that thing back up? Be-
cause I found myself too preoc-
cupied to do it and then all of
a sudden, I noticed it’s around
my neck there.”

eryone is different,” Blinder
responded. “I was just curious
what your thinking was. If it
was some kind of statement, if

“I just try to do my best,”
Leach said jumping in. “I try
to do my best with it. But once
you’re six-feet apart, I can’t
help but wonder if some of this
isn’t an homage to politicians.

ing bug hit the Busch fami-
ly long before the NASCAR
champion brothers were
born. Their father attend-
ed the first Daytona 500
in 1959 with his parents,
and later, while working as
a mechanic at a Las Vegas
car dealership, he decided
to try racing at the local
short track.
Tom Busch built and
won in his own cars. When
his boys were born, he built
cars for them, too. It was
just a hobby when it began
but it turned out the Busch
brothers were a pair of thor-
oughbreds.
Busch developed his
sons into a pair of aggres-
sive and motivated young

his cart. So he’s got a big
task,” Kyle Busch said.
Brexton’s win sparked
emotions for all the Busch
drivers, particularly Kurt,
who was reflective after his
nephew’s win. Kurt wasn’t
there when Brexton won
Saturday night but got all
the details as the family
flew to Las Vegas together
Sunday morning.
“I just sat there on the
plane going ‘My dad helped
me, we helped Kyle, Kyle
and my dad and myself are
helping Brexton,’ it definite-
ly felt like a generational
shift was happening,” the
42-year-old said. “I honestly
had a feeling with his win,
it was like, my job is almost
done here. I’m starting to
become that old guy, got
to find the rocking chair
because Brexton is taking
over.”
Las Vegas Motor Speed-
way has been tough on the
Busch brothers, who grew
up dominating the three-
eighths-mile asphalt bull-
ring on the property. All
that success on the very
same grounds, yet nothing
but disappointment over at
the big track.
Kyle won once, in 2009,
but Kurt was 0-for-21 when
the Cup race started Sun-
day night. Kurt wasn’t all
that great for two thirds of
the event and then a caution
flipped the race completely.
