Suffering for Others

Devotional Reading: II Corinthians 5:16-21

Background Scripture: Isaiah 53
Print: Isaiah 53:4-6, 10-12

Objectives
1. God used the suffering of His Servant to bring healing and salvation to His people.
2. The Suffering Servant in Isaiah 53 represents Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
3. The Suffering Servant was inflicted with pain and death because of the sins and
disobedience of all human beings.
John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Isaiah 53
Isaiah Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
53:1

John The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for
12:34 ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son
of man?
John Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while
12:35 ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness
knoweth not whither he goeth.
John While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.
12:36 These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
John But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on
12:37 him:
John That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord,
12:38 who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been
revealed?
John Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
12:39
John He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see
12:40 with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should
heal them.
John These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
12:41
John Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of
12:42 the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the
synagogue:
John For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
12:43

Romans And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How
10:15 beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad
tidings of good things!
Romans But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath
10:16 believed our report?
Romans So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
10:17
Isaiah For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he
53:2 hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we
should desire him.
This addresses Jesus’ humanity
Isaiah And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall
11:1 grow out of his roots:
Isaiah And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and
11:2 understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of
the fear of the LORD;
Isaiah And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he
11:3 shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of
his ears:
Isaiah But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the
11:4 meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and
with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
The Pharisees weren’t able to recall Isaiah chapter 11 or chapter 53:
Matthew While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
22:41
Matthew Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him,
22:42 The son of David.
Matthew He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
22:43
Matthew The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine
22:44 enemies thy footstool?
Matthew If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
22:45
Matthew And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from
22:46 that day forth ask him any more questions.
Jesus is the root and the offspring of David
Revelation I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the
22:16 churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and
morning star.
Isaiah He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we
53:3 hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isaiah Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken,
53:4 smitten of God, and afflicted.

Prophecy Fulfilled
Matthew And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid,
8:14 and sick of a fever.
Matthew And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and
8:15 ministered unto them.
Matthew When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed
8:16 with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that
were sick:
Matthew That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
8:17 Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Isaiah But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
53:5 chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

I Peter For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving
2:21 us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
I Peter Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
2:22
I Peter Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened
2:23 not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
I Peter Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being
2:24 dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Isaiah All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the
53:6 LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Judges In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was
17:6 right in his own eyes.
Isaiah He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a
53:7 lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his
mouth.

Isaiah He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for
53:8 he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he
stricken.

Acts And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the
8:26 south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
Acts And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great
8:27 authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her
treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
Acts Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
8:28
Acts Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
8:29
Acts And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said,
8:30 Understandest thou what thou readest?
Acts And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired
8:31 Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
Acts The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the
8:32 slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
Acts In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his
8:33 generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
Acts And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the
8:34 prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
Acts Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached
8:35 unto him Jesus.
Acts And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch
8:36 said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Acts And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he
8:37 answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Acts And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the
8:38 water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Isaiah And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had
53:9 done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
And he made his grave with the wicked
Luke And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou
23:39 be Christ, save thyself and us.
Luke But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing
23:40 thou art in the same condemnation?
Luke And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this
23:41 man hath done nothing amiss.
Luke And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy
23:42 kingdom.
Luke And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me
23:43 in paradise.

and with the rich in his death;

Matthew When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named
27:57 Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
Matthew He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded
27:58 the body to be delivered.
Matthew And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
27:59
Matthew And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and
27:60 he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

Isaiah Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his
53:10 soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure
of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
- It pleased the LORD to bruise him means that Jesus was accepted as a sin
offering, as opposed to the unacceptable offering:
Isaiah To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I
1:11 am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight
not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
Isaiah When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to
1:12 tread my courts?
Isaiah Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new
1:13 moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is
iniquity, even the solemn meeting.

Hebrews For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away
10:4 sins.
Hebrews Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering
10:5 thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
Hebrews In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
10:6

Hebrews For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
7:26 separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Hebrews Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for
7:27 his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered
up himself.
Hebrews For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of
7:28 the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for
evermore.
Isaiah He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my
53:11 righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

Romans He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he
8:32 not with him also freely give us all things?
Romans Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that
8:33 justifieth.
Romans Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen
8:34 again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession
for us.
Isaiah Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the
53:12 strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the
transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Prophecy Fulfilled

15:25

15:26 THE JEWS.

15:27 other on his left.

15:28 transgressors.

Luke And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that
22:31 he may sift you as wheat:
Luke But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted,
22:32 strengthen thy brethren.
Luke And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and
22:33 to death.
Luke And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou
22:34 shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
Luke And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes,
22:35 lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
Luke Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and
22:36 likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy
one.
Luke For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me,
22:37 And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me
have an end.
