DETAIL DESIGN REPORT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
The proposed residential building is located at Suryabinayak Municipality owned by Mr. Ratna Pd. Kawang. The
plinth area of purposed residential building is 809.11 sqft. This report is intended to elaborate the structural analysis
and ductile design of the purposed building as per the Nepal Standard.

2 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
2.1 INTRODUCTION
The structural analysis of the building frame is carried out by means of a structural analysis and design software,
SAP2000 and some components by manual calculations. Seismic loads are applied according to the IS1893 (Part
1):2002. Analysis is performed for different load combinations as prescribed in the code. The fundamental time
period of the structural model is program calculated. Both seismic coefficient method and response spectrum
method is carried out during the analysis. Importance factor of 1.0 is adopted with the response reduction factor of 5
in the calculation of seismic coefficient for the sever zone having the zone factor of 0.36 and soft soil type.
The structural analysis was followed by a RC design for the building frame. Member sizing and spacing has been
performed by successive analysis and corresponding design. The RC design has been performed with the help of the
software SAP2000 v 19. The design is done according to IS456:2000 and detailing is done according to
IS13920:1993. British code has also been utilized during the detailing of the super and substructures. The design
calculation according to the algorithm of SAP2000 has been followed again which follows the IS codes IS-456:2000
and IS13920:1993.
Model has been analyzed both statically as well as dynamically (Modal Analysis). Materials adopted are linear
elastic with the appropriate values of Modulus of Elasticity and Poisson ratio. The superstructure consists of the
portal frame with beams and columns. All the calculated loads are assigned in FEM model as input parameters.
The following figure gives the overall picture of purposed residential building.

DETAIL DESIGN REPORT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
For the analysis of the superstructure frame of the purposed building different types of materials has been used.
Some of the major properties required for analysis are enlisted below:
2.3.2 Steel

Grade Fe 500 for main bars and stirrups
Unit weight 78.5 kN/m3
Modulus of Elasticity 200000 N/mm2
Poisson’s ratio 0.3

Eccentricity : 0.05 %
2.4.2 Loads
Live Load : 2 KN/m2
Different loadings are applied in the frame model. Slab dead load and live load are calculated and applied manually
in the model. The following sets of loads pattern were defined for the analysis in SAP 2000.

DETAIL DESIGN REPORT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
As per IS 1893(part I):2002 Clause no. 6.3.1.2, the following load combinations are considered for analysis:
1.5DL
1.5(DL+IL)
1.2(DL+IL+EQ), 1.2(DL+IL-EQ)
1.5(DL+EQ), 1.5(DL-EQ)
.9DL+1.5EQ, .9DL-1.5EQ
The dead load of the structural members is automatically taken by the SAP software. The additional dead loads are
assigned in the SAP using the calculations and the code referred are NS, BS and IS codes. All the dead loads
included in the model are as follows:

3.1.2 Column-Substructure
The size of column for substructure has also been taken equal to the size of column as that for the superstructure so
as to make the easier placement of the vertical reinforcement during construction of the structure. The percentage
reinforcement for the column of the substructure is taken equal to that of superstructure column lying just above it.
The output value of reinforcement from SAP analysis for different level of column is listed below in respective
diagrams.

3.3 Slab
Slab has not been modeled in this building model so as to make the frame structure critical during earthquake. But
slab dead load and live loads were assigned manually in the model in terms of uniformly distributed load. Analysis
and design of slab was done manually. All panel slabs are two way slabs.
3.4 Staircase
Open well staircase has not been modeled with the frame structure. Analysis and design of staircase is carried out
manually, ignoring the end restraint effects at the supports.
