STEM design brief

LET'S HAVE A SOLAR

LUNCH
Are you ready for a solar cook off?

Our school has been asked by Kidz Masterchef to complete a solar project
demonstrating your design and cooking skills. Kidz MasterChef has asked for
year six students to be involved in this competition which will be aired on
channel ten in 2021.

What will you be doing?

You and a partner are to design and create a solar oven in which you will be
able to cook a savoury and sweet item (frying an egg and creating a s’more).
The solar oven will need to be created in a way which attracts heat (thermal
energy) to transfer the suns heat to your solar oven to allow for the irreversible
and reversible changes.
Make sure you take digital photographs and videos to demonstrate the creation
process of your solar oven and the cooking of your egg and s’more.
You will use these photos and videos to create your own blog which will be
presented to the class and may even be used as part of the advertisement for
Kidz MasterChef!
Things to think about:
How long will need to cook your egg and s’more for?
Will one take longer than the other?
Consider the optimal temperature for a solar oven.
Generating design:

Revise solar/thermal energy by using the web or following the QR

code.
Research the recommended outdoor temperature and weather for
successful solar cooking.
Draw a diagram of your solar oven labelling the components and what
they will be used for. Create two separate designs (you and your
partner) and then share your ideas. Make a final design taking into
account the best ideas of both designs.
Consider:
o Which materials are best for attracting heat?
o What shape will you be using?
o Where will you be placing the oven when ready for cooking?

Project specification Presentation/ Time

You will have access to the below materials:

1. Boxes

2. Aluminium foil
and videos to create your blog.
3. Plastic wrap
4. Knife/ scissors Give yourself time to edit the videos and

Ensure there is a way to clean the surface
between the savoury and sweet cooking.
Work in a safe and supportive
environment.
Project management:
1. Have your design in a place which you and your partner can refer to at
any point.
2. Collect all materials required for the project and prepare them to the
correct size.
3. Start commencing putting the materials together. Consider if there is
anything you have noticed which you were or were not expecting?
4. Make sure you are keeping digital footage.
5. Once your solar oven is set up, make sure you are aware of the
temperature you need for optimal cooking.
6. Set up your oven in your outdoor area.
7. Consider pre heating time.
8. When you are ready place your food onto your oven and observe what
you see. Complete the observation sheet.
9. Following your cook up edit your photos and videos to create your own
blog.
10. Be ready to see yourself on Kidz MasterChef!
