Teaching and Assessment of Literature Studies is somehow one of the best subject I’ve

ever learned in my life not because it was being taught by Ms. Mary Ann Bea but because it was

very interesting. I know that the time were short due to the Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)

but every minute spent was memorable because Ms. Bea handled it very well. We tackled many

discussion during the Prelim period, but the main topics were consists of five (5) topics, The

Reading Process, Recurring Themes, KWL Chart, Interactive Reading Process, and

Communicative Competence.

All of the topics that were being taught by Ms. Bea are interesting but these five topics

that was mentioned were the best. The Reading process has three stages, Before, During, After

Reading. It tackles about the process and development of the students to see their progress when

they read a story. Recurring themes, talks about the theme that appears in the story. A theme is

an idea, feeling, action, and etc. It is the subject of some communication, reinforced or conveyed

in multiple ways. When something recurs, it happens more than once. KWL Chart, we are all

familiar with this kind of chart because tackles about what the students know (prior knowledge),

what they wanted to know (questions to ask), and what they have learned from the lesson that

was discussed by the teacher. Interactive Reading Process (IRL) it means active reading or

reading is important. It has two process, the bottom-up processing (words, phrases, ideas, main

ideas, and themes), and top-down processing (themes, main ideas, ideas, phrases, and words) that
interacts simultaneously throughout the reading process. Communicative Competence, one of the

most interesting topic. It consists of four (4) components, Linguistic competence (language

code), Sociolinguistic competence (sociocultural rules of use), Discourse (how to produce and

comprehend oral/written texts in the modes of speaking/writing and listening/reading

respectively, and Strategic (recognize and repair communication breakdowns before, during, or

after they occur).

After I learned all of these, it ended abruptly and it also ended the entire school year

because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Enhanced Community Quarantine that were being

extended three times and hopefully, it’ll extend anymore and I was kind of hoping that Ms. Bea

will be still our teacher next school year.
