LEARNING ACTIVITY 2
OBJECTIVES
BACKGROUND / SCENARIO
In this learning activity, you will study how to install, test, and distinguish the
different parts, icons and commands in Packet Tracer. The best way to learn about
networking is to do it. Cisco Packet Tracer, a pioneer in network configuration
simulation tool, help your networking configuration skills from your PC or Smartphone.
PROCEDURES:
To obtain and install your copy of Cisco Packet Tracer follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Go to https://www.netacad.com/courses/packet-tracer .
Step 2: Click the link in the word Introduction to Packet Tracer course or click this link
https://www.netacad.com/courses/packet-tracer/introduction-packet-tracer .
Step 4: You will be redirected to another link displaying this form. If you’re a new user,
you can proceed to another page. If not, you can use your Cisco credentials to Login.
Note: Packet Tracer uses authentication with your login and password when you first
use it and for each new OS login session. Download and install only the latest version
of Packet Tracer. You can read Frequent Asked Question (FAQ) or view tutorials at
https://www.netacad.com.
Step 5: For New User: Complete the form with your data and complete your
Networking Academy profile.
Step 6: Log into your Cisco Networking Academy “I’m Learning” page.
Step 7: Select Resources from the menu in the upper right portion of your screen.
Step 8: Select Download Packet Tracer.
Step 9: Choose an Operating System (OS) you are using.
Step 10: Select the version of Packet Tracer you need to download.

Step 12: Locate the download files and install it on your device.
Step 14: After installation, close and restart your web browser.
Step 15: Launch Cisco Packet Tracer by selecting the appropriate icon.
Step 16: When prompted with the Sign in Form, use your Netacad login information to
authenticate.
Note: The guest account offers limited features. This account allows you to save only
three (3) practice labs.
Step 16: Packet Tracer will launch; you are ready to explore its features like you can
access the short course “Introduction to Packet Tracer” to learn tips and tricks.
Warning: We strongly recommend not to download Cisco Packet Tracer from other
websites or torrent sources. It’s possible that the software might be infected with
viruses or malware. This website provides SHA and MD5 checksums of official Packet
Tracer version to help you to check if the software you downloaded is valid.

After Installation, open the Packet Tracer Software Tool. Your screen should
look like figure 9 shown below.
This initial interface contains components. If you are unsure of what an interface
item does, move your mouse over the item and a help balloon will explain the item
Note: If the file does not open, make sure you have properly installed the Packet
Tracer application program.

1. Menu Bar – Consists of File, Edit, Options, View, Tools, Extensions, and Help
menus. You will find basic commands such as Open, Save, Save as Pkz, Print,
and Settings and Preferences in these menus. You will also be able to access
the Activity Wizard from the Extensions menu.
2. Main Tool Bar - Provides shortcut icons to most used menu commands. The following
are New, Open, Save, Print, Network Information, User profile, Activity Wizard,
Copy, Paste, Undo, Redo, Zoom In, Zoom Reset, Zoom Out, Show Viewport,
Show Workspace List, View Command Log, Custom Devices Dialog, Cluster
Association Dialog.

3. Common Tools Bar - Provides access to these commonly used workspace tools:
Select (Esc), Inspect (I), Delete (Del), Resize (Alt+R), Place Note (N), Drawing
Line (L), Draw Rectangles (R), Draw Ellipse (E), Draw Freeform (F), Add Simple
PDU (P), and Add Complex PDU (C).
4. Logical/Physical Workspace and Navigation Bar - You can toggle between the
Physical Workspace and the Logical Workspace with the tabs on this bar. In Logical
Workspace, this bar also allows you to Go Back One Level (Alt+Left), Create New
Cluster (Shift+ U), Move Object (Shift+M), Set Background Image (Shift+I),
and Environment (Shift+E). In Physical Workspace, this bar allows you to navigate
through physical locations, default Intercity (Current Container Name), Navigation
Panel (Shift+N), Back Level (Alt+Left), Create New City (Shift+C), Create New
Building (Shift+B), Create New Generic Container (Shift+F), Create New Closet
(Shift+W), Create new Rack, Create New Table, Move Object (Shift+M), Grid
Preferences, Set Background Image (Shift+I), Environment (Shift+E) and Go to
Working Closet(Shift+H).
5. Workspace - This area is where you will create your network, watch simulations, and
view many kinds of information and statistics.
6. Realtime Mode /Simulation Mode Bar - You can toggle between Realtime Mode
(Shift+R) and Simulation Mode (Shift+S) with the tabs on this bar. This bar also
provides a clock that display Time in Realtime Mode and Simulation Mode, Power
Cycle Devices (Alt+S) as well as the Play Control buttons and the Event List toggle
button in Simulation Mode.
7. Device-Type Selection Box - This box contains the type of devices and connections
available in Packet Tracer. The Device-Specific Selection Box will change depending
on which type of device you choose.
8. Device-Specific Selection Box - This box is where you choose specifically which
devices you want to put in your network and which connections to make. In this box,
you'll find devices that may have already been obsolete. You have an option to hide
legacy equipment in the Preferences window under Options.
9. Scenario Description – In this box, you will see the Scenario no., Button like
New, Delete, Toggle PDU List Window (Fire, Last Status, Source,
Destination, Type, Color, Time(sec), Periodic, Num, Edit, Delete).
10. User Created Packet Window - This window manages the packets you put in the
network during simulation scenarios. See the "Simulation Mode" section for more
details. You can completely hide the User Created Packet Window (UCPW) by
clicking on the expand/collapse button. You can also resize UCPW by placing
the cursor near the left edge of the window (it will turn into a "resize" cursor)
and then dragging the cursor left or right.

11. Network Component Box - This is done by choosing devices from the Device-
Specific Selection Box. Configure device parameters such as the Physical
Device Display, Config, CLI, and Attributes. You can change the IP address
through graphical dialogue boxes and make advanced configurations and view
network information from the CLI interface on a router or switch.
Note: Packet Tracer has two workspaces (Logical and Physical) and two modes
(Realtime and Simulation). If you open the packet tracer, you are in the Logical
Workspace in Realtime Mode. You can build your network and see it run in real
time in this configuration.

Note: Packet Tracer allows you to save your topology (PKT) as well as any custom
device icons and backgrounds that you applied to the Logical Workspace and Physical
Workspace to a file called a PKZ.
A PKZ can retain any external files you add in a single save file, which allows for
portability and compactness from computer to computer.
