will choose the community and the issue present to it.

COMMUNITY ISSUE

Poblacion 6, Brgy. San Jose, Lipa City Trashes, Burning Of Trashes

COMMUNITY’S PROFILE: The group will craft the Community’s Profile of the chosen community. The person/member of
the group who resides to the chosen community should lead the group in crafting the aforementioned component by
supplying necessary information about his/her community. (as a group)

Brgy. San Jose is a rural community located in Lipa City, Batangas. The barangay has over 1600 households and 4800
locals living in the area. It is also rich in fertile soil which is currently used for farms and poultry such as the Silangan Poultry
Farm. For those reasons, there are various business establishments in the community ranging from waterworks,
convenience stores, butcher’s shop, bakeries and presently, had just acquired a new resort named “Rose Villas Resort” as
a step towards its urbanization. Unfortunately, due to these types of occupations which sells products that are usually
grouped together with non-biodegradable products such as plastics and aluminum cans, there are a lot of waste products
that are generated daily. Furthermore, there are not enough trash collectors, trash cans or responsible citizens that cleans
up and segregate their own garbage resulting to the locals to just burn or leave their garbage lying around anywhere. With
allthese in consideration, the cooperation and responsibility of each individual citizens in cleaning up after themselves is an
essential to have an unpolluted surrounding beneficial for both the people as well as the environment.

B. THESIS STATEMENT AND SMART OBJECTIVE: After identifying the community and issue present to it, each
member will craft his / her own Thesis Statement nd SMART Objective. (individual)

way, the recyclable trashes, which are the most common
waste material in the community, will decrease by at least
75% by January 30, 2019.

Katigbak, Hyuan Larze

SMART OBJECTIVE THESIS STATEMENT

The people in the community should consider trash

segregation to address the problem.

To diminish the trashes made by people , we need to

segregate because it is much better to recycle, less waste
goes to disposal area , cheaper and better for people and
the environment. Having 1 trash bin is not enough, and so,
the Group 1 members of LS 302 plans to make 3 land fill
holes for the chosen community, Brgy. San Jose, which is
large enough to fill a month of their trash, making it an
improved environment.

provide work to those people who are financially challenged
by giving incentives to those who clean the sidewalk around
the purok or streets. We believe that this will help contribute
on reducing the garbage around the community. The
barangay needs immediate help, and our everyday actions
matter.

1 of LS 302 came up with a plan in order to promote waste necessary for the betterment of the environment, society
segregation in the chosen community, brgy. San Jose. In and the community.
this said plan, we aim to team up with different barangay
officials to propitiously carry out a strict and proper waste
segregation in every household. Having this project
continuously would make the trashes of the community
lesser by approximately 80% by the start of February 2019.
Also, it would make a cleaner, better, and healthier
environment and for the community.

Umali, Mandy Isabelle

SMART OBJECTIVE THESIS STATEMENT

The group 1 students of LS302, plans to promote recycling Therefore, the people in the community should show more
the trashes made by the people because it can turn waste cooperation, determination, hard work and should consider
material into a raw material that can be used productively for recycling to address the issue.
the residents/people of Brgy. San Jose, Lipa City thus,
recycling substitutes used materials for virgin materials,
thereby reducing the demand for natural resources. It
conserves energy and it creates jobs in the community. By
having this project sustainable It could help not just
environmentally but also financially by around February
2019, 70% of the trashes are expected to be reduced in this
community.

C.A.R.E Program: A Way to Sustain Cleanliness in the Society

Environmental Conditions can significantly influence the hygienic lifestyle of the people living around it.
A clean environment helps in preventing the spread of various diseases and reduce pollution in both land,
water and air. However, the constant increase of waste materials caused by the irresponsible locals of Brgy.
San Jose in properly disposing of their garbage has led to all kinds of problems in return.

Located in Brgy. San Jose, Lipa City, with numerous small business establishments ranging from
sundry stores, bakeries, meat shops and so forth which sells products that are usually grouped together with
non biodegradable such as plastics and aluminium cans, generates a great quantity of wastes daily.
Regardless of having garbage men who are responsible for accumulating the trash in the community weekly,
the generated wastes outweighs the workers ability to collect it resulting in a slow but constant increase of
litter, as well as locals addressing the problem through burning. The consequence for these actions is the
pollution on land, water and air leading to an unhygienic ecosystem which is disadvantageous for the health of
all those around it. Being a problem that is similar to the neighbouring communities as well , ignoring it is not
an option. Aside from the projects made by the Local Government ( LGU ) and the Department of
Environmental and Natural Resources ( DENR ) and the upcoming Sustainable Lipa Project ( SLP ), the
project C.A.R.E would be of great help in diminishing the number of non - biodegradable that may be littered
around the community. Therefore, the cooperation of each civilian in gathering their own recyclables through
the project C.A.R.E, is necessary in order to gain and maintain a healthy environment in a community.

However, according to Anjani through Clean Air Council, Waste Facts and Figures ( 2006 ), trash is
becoming a larger problem of people and environment. As people continue to waste more, people use
additional natural resources and increase pollution in our world. Furthermore, according to Ong, a medical
doctor ( 2015 ), it is common to see clouds of smoke rising in fields due to leaves burnt. This is an abhorrent
practice that has been causing thousand of Filipinos to suffer from lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer
and heart disease. The government is losing millions of pesos in hospitalisation expenses and lost productivity
due to people getting sick from the smoke. This rampant burning of leaves and garbages in the provinces has
to be stopped. Even the low states that burning of leaves and wastes is harmful and illegal. However, same
politicians are slow to enforce the law, leading to more people getting seriously ill.

Keeping in mind of the vision, the decrease of waste materials around the community directly
proportional to its burning in order to have a much more hygienic environment for the betterment of the civilians
in Brgy. San Jose, Group 1 of LS 302 plans to partner with the LGU to implement the project C.A.R.E ( Collect
All your Recyclables Everyday ) in which chosen members of the LGU places a green trash bag entitled “
recyclables “ outside each house and 2 of these near sundry stores in the community and in this way, the
recyclable trashes, which are the most common waste material in the community will decrease by at least 75%
by January 30, 2019.

CAPSTONE Initiative Title: Project C.A.R.E. : A Way to Reduce Waste

Community : Barangay San Jose, Lipa City

Program : Project C.A.R.E. : Collect All Recyclables Everyday

STEP 1: Request for Financial Help from Stakeholders

● After all the preliminary activities like community walk/observation, collaboration within the group,

identification of feasible solution to the existing problem of the chosen community, and

conceptualization of the introduction and justification, the Group 1 of LS 302 will accumulate their

gathered data and convey it to the De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) Stakeholders. In doing so, the group

will form a letter or email requesting for financial assist and equipment provision for a possible

upcoming project to address the existing issue in the chosen community, Barangay San Jose, Lipa

City. In the process, the letter would first be sent to the Learning Area Chairs (LAC) of DLSL to be

further examined, edited and signed before it is then delivered to the stakeholders. If ever the

request for financial help and equipment provision has not been approved by the stakeholders, the

group themselves would allocate their individual budget to fund the inexpensive project.

STEP 2: Propose a Collaboration with the Barangay’s LGU

● After sending the letter of request and hopefully attaining an approval, the group will then construct

a letter of proposal to be forwarded to the barangay captain of the chosen community. The letter

will feature the following subject matters :

○ Observed environmental issues of the barangay

○ Possible causes of the issue

○ Proposed Solution to address the issue

○ The Local Government Unit’s (LGU) role in the proposed solution

○ Date, time and venue (LGU’s Office) of a possible meeting to address the problem

○ People involved in the meeting including vendors and the barangay captain

● Once the group has finished composing the letter of proposal, it will again be sent to the LAC of

DLSL to be further inspected, edited and signed before it will then be delivered to the chosen

community’s barangay captain.

STEP 2: Prepare for the meeting with the LGU and Local vendors.

● Once the letter of proposal has been delivered to the respective LGU and approved by the

Barangay Captain of San Jose, the group will start preparing for the meeting about addressing the

issue of the barangay, which is its increasing number of trash prior to its burning, through the

implementation of the proposed solution, Project C.A.R.E. (Collect All your Recyclables Everyday).

In doing the step, the following procedures should be accomplished:

○ First, the group will compose a powerpoint and dialogue to be used for the meeting which

will highlight the environmental issue of the barangay, possible causes and the proposed

solution to address the issue. The purpose of the presentation will be as a guide about the

project and will also serve as a defense on why the invited audience should support/invest

in the project.

○ Second, the group, with the help of the staff from the LGU, will aid in organizing the venue.

Such preparations include setting up enough chairs for the invited audience and installing

the projector or television provided by the LGU or DLSL Stakeholders to showcase the

powerpoint.

○ Third, the group members will be assigned different tasks by the group leader for before,

during and after the presentation. These includes who will escort the participating guests

into the venue, who will be the mc/s for the presentation, who will operate the

documentation of the presentation through video and note taking, and who will be the one

to handout a token of appreciation for each of the invited guests who arrived for the

presentation.

○ Fourth, the group will construct letters of invitation for each individual local vendors located

in the barangay. The content of the letters will indicate the date, time, venue and topic of the

planned meeting. Each letter would be checked, approved and fully signed by the barangay

captain before it is then distributed.

○ Lastly, the group will purchase trash bags with recycling symbol on it which comes at about
20 pieces for 80 php and tokens of appreciation for the invited guests using the amount

appropriated by the DLSL stakeholders. The trash bag is a requirement for the execution of

the project and will be distributed to the vendors who will be attending the forthcoming

meeting.

Step 3: Execute the Seminar and Project C.A.R.E.

● Once the meeting starts with the expected number of at least 10 participating local vendors, the

assigned mc/s from the group will start by first a proper introduction and reason for the seminar,

then continuing with the presentation explaining the environmental issue of the barangay, possible

causes and the proposed solution to address the issue and the mechanics of the project in which

the vendors should place 1 trash bag every three days in their respective store to be used by their

consumers. Moreover, after a specified date, hopefully a month or so, there will be a scheduled

collection of trash where in the collected trash bags should be delivered to the LGU in exchange

for cash, its amount depending on the total weight of the collected garbage. After the presentation,

another assigned group member will start to distribute 10 trash bags to each of the participating

local vendors together with a token of appreciation.

● After a month from the seminar, the scheduled collection of trash will take place. This said trash,

would be sold by the LGU community to the nearest junkyard for currency to be used as funds for

future projects inside the community.

Step 4: Evaluate the effect of Project C.A.R.E.

● A month after the execution of the project, the group will evaluate the cleanliness of the barangay

through an evaluation where in the following procedures should be accomplished.

○ First, the group will form and print a survey which includes a rubric/evaluation from 1-5 in
which 1 being the lowest, and 5 being the highest querying how much cleaner did the local

shops look currently compared to the month before. The evaluation sheets will also ask the

local consumers and vendors about their thoughts on the project and how well it affected

the cleanliness of the local shops.

○ Second, the group will distribute a total of 30 evaluation sheets to the local consumers and

vendors

○ Third, the obtained results will then be presented to the barangay captain to show the

effects of the project giving the possibility for the project to be implemented again and for

the idea to spread in other barangays.
