Creating Volcanoes!

Introduction

Miss Trewren’s parents are thinking of moving to a live overseas! there’s just
one issue… the place they want to move to is located near an active volcano!
Over the past few weeks you have been learning a lot of information about
volcanoes! So you should all be experts by now. We all should know by now
that volcanoes can have a big impact on the environment around them if they
erupt… so should Miss Trewren’s parents reconsider moving near a
volcano???

Brief
It is your duty to create model volcanoes that look like real-life
volcanoes that will erupt using different ingredients. Your
volcanoes will erupt and hopefully show the impact volcanoes
can have on the environment around them. You will then be
required to reflect on your model volcano and inform Miss
Trewren’s parents if they should or should not move near a
volcano, given the effects on the environment if it erupts.

Generating Ideas
You will be working in small groups of three to create these model volcanoes.
You will be required to brainstorm different materials you will use to create
your volcanoes as a group and decide on the best choice to make your
volcano life-like, and don’t forget hold all the ingredients to make it erupt!
Remember, the more life-like it is, the more helpful it will be for Miss Trewren’s
parents!

Project Specifications

The model volcanoes must:

- Resemble a volcano (think
about the shape of a volcano,
what is it made up out of?)
- Be able to hold all the
ingredients to cause the
eruption in the centre of the
volcano.
Project Management
• Before constructing your model volcanoes, it is CRITICAL that you plan
ahead. In your groups you will be required to brainstorm different materials
you could use to create your volcanoes. From this brainstorm you will need
to decide, as a group, which materials will work best. All group members
should contribute different ideas so that the group has the best chance of
success!
• You will then construct your volcanoes, keeping in mind you will need
something in the middle of the volcano that will hold the ingredients used to
make the volcano erupt.
• Once volcanoes are created and ready to erupt, students are to record the
eruption, as well as take pictures before and after the eruption to see the
difference in the volcanoes surroundings afterwards.
• Then, time to reflect! Reflection is essential to effective learning. From this
reflection, you will present your reflection to the class and Miss Trewren’s
parents.

Evaluation
For this you will be assessed as a group, however, don’t forget
group success comes from each group member contributing and
sharing ideas so don’t let your team down! Miss Trewren’s parents
will decide on which group was able to provide them with the best
information and advice!

Presentation
You will be required to create a prevention
within your groups that incorporate all
elements of the reflection question sheet. Your
presentation should also include pictures and
videos from the eruption. You will be presenting
to the class and Miss Trewren’s parents. So
make sure you are ready to justify why it is or is
not a good idea to move near a volcano!

Time
• You will be given two lessons to create your volcano as well as reflect and
present to the class about your groups’ volcano.

• The first lesson will run for approximately 80 minutes. This is when you will
brainstorm your ideas, construct your volcano, make the volcano erupt and
complete a reflection question sheet in groups.

• The second lesson, which will run for approximately 60 minutes, will be more
reflection and you will create power point presentations that include the
information from the reflection that you will present to the class, but most
importantly Miss Trewren’s parents!
