SECTION - 3
Paragraph Type
This section contains 2 paragraphs, each describing theory, experiment, data etc. Four questions relate to
two paragraphs with two questions on each paragraph. Each question pertaining to a particular passage
should has one or more than one correct answers among the four given choices (A), (B), (C) and (D).

Paragraph for Q. Nos. 17 and 18

Consider a rolling disc of radius R, moving on a horizontal plane along +ve x-axis with speed V. Motion is
without slippage. This motion of the disc can be seen as combination of translational motion of the disc with
centre of mass of the disc and pure rotation of the disc about its centre of mass with angular speed given by
V
  . For translational motion each and every particle of the disc will have velocity V along +ve x-axis and
R
for rotational motion with constant angular speed  about an axis passing through its centre of mass. Bear in
mind due to rotation each and every particle of the disc will have acceleration relative to the centre of mass
which is directed towards centre of mass and its magnitude given by 2r, here r is distance of the particle from
the centre of mass. So we can say in this case that a particular particle will have a constant acceleration
which is changing its direction all time. You can see that fortunately rate of change in direction of this
acceleration is also .

O
Q B

To get the real motion of any particle, we superimpose the two aforementioned motion. In this way, we get the
velocity of particle which is in contact with the surface instantaneously as zero. This point is instantaneously at
rest. Once position of instantaneous centre is determined we can easily find velocity of any other point relative
to ground (or instantaneous centre) by using concept of circular motion which is r in magnitude
perpendicular to the line joining that point and instantaneous centre. At t = 0, four points on the rim of the
cylinder are shown. At this moment P is instantaneous centre, A is the topmost point while Q and B lie on
horizontal diameter of the disc.

17. Velocities of points Q and B at t = 0 are

(A) Equal in magnitude and parallel to each other
(B) Equal in magnitude and opposite to each other
(C) Equal in magnitude and perpendicular to each other

(D) Unequal in magnitude and parallel to each other
