The primary objective is to develop a mobile application and utilize its use to gather pertinent data and

information regarding the seismic evaluation of a building.

Its features include using either FEMA or ASCE in the rapid assessment of buildings.

Significance of Pre-Assessment of Buildings for Earthquake Preparedness

• To understand the condition of the building;

• To identify any signs of material deterioration;

• To find critical areas to repair immediately;

• To identify any alteration and addition in the structure, misuse which may result in overloading;

• To enhance life cycle of building by suggesting preventive and corrective measures, like repairs
and retrofitting; and

• Assure compliance with required building regulations and standards, and achieve legal
building certification

Some Acceptable Methods or Standards

• ASCE 41-13: Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings

• FEMA 154: Rapid Visual Screening of Buildings for Potential Seismic Hazards

• New Zealand Draft Code – The Assessment and Improvement of the Structural Performance of
Earthquake Risk Buildings

• SERC Report – Formulation of Guidelines for Assessment of Strength and Performance of

Existing Buildings & Recommendations on Retrofitting

• UNIDO Vol. 4 – Post-Earthquake Damage Evaluation and Strength Assessment of Buildings

under Seismic Conditions

• Euro Code 8: Design Provisions For Earthquake Resistance of Structures – Parts 1-4 General
Rules for Strengthening and Repair of Buildings

• ASCE/SEI 31-03 – Seismic Evaluation of Existing Buildings

• FEMA 310: Handbook for the Seismic Evaluation of Buildings: A Pre-Standard

ASCE 41-13

Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings

• For Seismic Evaluation

• ASCE 31-03, FEMA 310, FEMA 178

• For Seismic Retrofit Design

• ASCE 41-06, FEMA 356, FEMA 273

• A Standard
FEMA 154

• The Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) handbook can be used by trained

personnel to identify, inventory, and screen buildings that are
potentially seismically vulnerable.

• The RVS procedure comprises a method and several forms that help
users to quickly identify, inventory, and score buildings according to
their risk of collapse if hit by major earthquakes
