May 2005 Examination Review & Data Summary Report
A Profile of Diploma Programme Test Takers
Worldwide
IBO has seen steady growth from 2000 to 2005, with the number of IB schools growing
57%, the number of candidates growing 73%, and the number of exams taken growing
by 78% (Figure 1 and Table 1).
While the number of students has grown faster than schools, the number of exams
taken has grown faster still, illustrating the number of exams IB students were each
taking increased from 2000 to 2005. While most candidates∗ worldwide took one
exam each year between 2003 and 2005, more than a quarter of students took six
exams each (Table 2).
IB students worldwide scored the highest in the subject areas of languages and social
sciences. The subjects in which the highest percentage of students scored a 4 or
above were language A1 (96%), second language (92%), and social sciences (86%).
While the subject with the highest percentage of scores below passing (a score of a 3
or below) was mathematics, with 30% of scores of a 3 or below, this subject also had
the second highest percentage of scores of 7 (8%) (Figure 3 and Table 3). For more
detailed information on scores by individual course, see Appendices 5-7.
IBNA
Not surprisingly, IBNA, the largest IB region, saw a growth in the number of schools,
candidates, and exams similar to that worldwide from 2000 to 2005, with a slightly
higher percentage of growth in the number of candidates and exams (Figure 4 and
Table 8). Also, while 49% of IB schools are found in the North American region, IBNA
boasts 66% of candidates and 54% of exams taken (Table 4).
The number of exams each student took between 2003 and 2005 was more evenly
distributed for IBNA than worldwide, with fewer IBNA candidates taking six exams
each, and more taking two, three, four, and five exams each (Figure 5 and Table 9).
Also, while the number of candidates increased by 80% between 2003 and 2005, the
ratio of students taking each number of exams stayed much the same during that
time.
IB students in North America scored the highest in the subject areas of languages and
social sciences and lowest in the arts and sciences. The subject groups in which the
highest percentage of students scored a 4 or above were language A1 (95%), second
language (85%), and social sciences (84%) (Figure 6 and Table 10). Students scored
the lowest in the sciences and arts, with only 14% scoring a 6 or above on arts exams
and 15% on science exams, as compared with 21% scoring a 6 or above in language A1.
For more detailed information on scores by individual course, see Appendices 6 and 7.
∗
Unless noted, figures referring to candidates include all types of candidates.
The United States
Within the North American region, the US had the largest percentage of growth in
schools (66%), candidates (89%), and exams (88%) between 2000 and 2005 (Figure 8
and Table 12). Also, the US had 82% of IB schools located in this region and accounted
for 81% of the diplomas awarded to IB candidates in North America in 2005. However,
while the US had the most candidates in the region, the percentage of scores of 4 and
above and the percentage of candidates awarded a Diploma was slightly lower than
the IBNA totals overall (Table 4 and Table 5).
The number of exams each IB candidate took in the US between 2003 and 2005 very
closely mirrored that of IBNA in total, with most students taking one or two exams
each year (Table 13). The average number of exams per candidate in the US in 2005
was 2.7 (Table 6).
IB candidates in the US had the highest percentage of scores of 4 and above in the
subject groups of languages and social sciences and the lowest in the arts and
sciences, which was the same trend for all North American candidates. An impressive
95% scored a 4 or higher on language A1 exams, with 85% and 81% scoring a 4 or above
on language B and social sciences exams, respectively. US students also scored well
in mathematics, with the highest percent of scores of a 6 or 7 being scored in this
subject (30%). Overall, a 5 was the most common exam score. For more detailed
information on scores by individual course, see Appendix 6.
In the United States, Florida, California, and Virginia were the top three states in
2005 for the number of schools, number of candidates, number of exams, number of
Diploma candidates, and the number of Diplomas awarded (Table 15).
Canada
In five years, Canada had a slower rate of growth than either IBNA or all IB regions,
with an increase of 25% in the number of schools, an increase of 44% in the number of
candidates, and an increase of 50% in the number of exams taken (Table 19).
Canadian students in general performed very well, with the percentage of students
scoring a 4 or above (93%) well above those of the United States (79%), IBNA (83%), or
the world (84%). Canada outperformed other countries in the region in terms of the
percent of Diploma students who scored a 4 or above (93%). Also, more Canadian
students took six exams each year between 2003 and 2005 (20%) than for the entire
IBNA region (10%) (Table 9 and Table 20). IB Candidates in Canada took slightly more
exams each (3.0) in 2005 than the IBNA region as a whole (2.74) (Table 6).
Not only did Canadian IB candidates outscore other students from the rest of the
region in all subject groups, but as a percentage, Canada also had the fewest
percentage of exams scores of 1 or 2. Like their counterparts in the United States,
Canadian students scored the highest in the subject groups of languages and social
sciences (Figure 14 and Table 21). However, students in Canada scored much better
than US students in mathematics and science, with 88% scoring a 4 or above in the
sciences as compared to 60% in the US, and almost half of the Canadian students who
took mathematics exams scored a 6 or 7 (48%), as compared to 30% in the US. For
more detailed information on scores by individual course, see Appendix 7.
While the province of Ontario had more actual numbers of schools, exams, diploma
candidates, and diplomas awarded, Québec boasted the highest percent of scores of 4
or above and of rate of passing the requirements for an IB Diploma. Alberta was close
behind Ontario in terms of the number of schools and exams, as well having the
second-highest Diploma pass rate.
Within IBNA, this area had the highest percentage of students taking more than four
exams and the highest percent of students taking six exams each (80% in 2005, see
Table 25).
Continuing the North American trend, IB candidates in the Caribbean and Bermuda
scored the highest on exams in the subjects of languages and the social sciences, and
the lowest in the sciences and mathematics (Figure 17 and Table 26). Most exams
received a 4 or a 5, with fewer scores of 6 and 7 than IBNA as a whole. While
students in these countries had the highest average of exams taken per student in the
region (Table 6 and Table 25), these students scored fewer fives and sixes than their
counterparts in the US and Canada.
