Based on the Documentary, why is it important to preserve historical sources?

Historical sources are important to preserve because history serves as a laboratory and the past
serves as a demarcation to understand the regional laws and social structures. This
understanding helps in our progress towards an ideal society. Preservation of historical sources
leads us to connect to specific times, places and events that were significant milestones in our collective past.  The
ability to revisit these preserved elements from time to time provides us with a sense of place, and maintains
continuity between our past and our present by preserving a trail of how we arrived at where, and who we are today.

What were the different sources of history that were given emphasis in the documentary? Why do you think that
these are important especially in the present period? *

The different sources that were given emphasis in the documentary are the history of Rizal’s education, Rizal’s
writings, Murillo Velarde map, Natural Cultural treasure that was written in ‘baybayin’ , General Luna’s letter and the
book of La Guerra Judaica. Historical sources help us reconnect to our past. It helps us to touch the lives of the
people about whom history is written. It also portrays how our ancestors live in the past. It helps us grasp how things
change and comprehend the factors that causes change, through history we understand what elements of an
institution or a society persist despite of change.

Explain how credible, reliable and authentic sources of history are important in the study of history.  *

Reliable and credible sources are important aspects in studying history because it is where we based our knowledge
and those knowledge we acquired are later on be imparted to other people, so us to avoid falsify conclusions and
inherent biases that can potentially render a source unusable for our research.

As a future teacher/professional, how will you impart what you learned in history? *

We all live in the present and we plan for the future – but how do we understand where we’re going and what
progress looks like? To know exactly where you’re going, you first need to understand where you have come from.
For that you need an appreciation of history. As a student, I have learned that through history, we can learn how
past societies, systems, ideologies, governments, cultures and technologies were built, how they operated, and how
they have changed. The rich history of the world helps us to paint a detailed picture of where we stand today.
Furthermore, reflecting on the past makes me understand that developing our knowledge of history means
developing our knowledge of all these different aspects of life. We can learn about the pillars upon which different
civilizations were built, including cultures and people different from their own. All this understanding will be imparted
to other people in such ways of telling them how we began and how history makes changes in our society. And
makes them realize that future will never be what it is without the past.

Why do you think that students of history find history less interesting and engaging?  *

Some students find history less interesting and engaging because history classes are not conducted in the
most interesting way. Learning history either involves lectures which consist of the teacher rambling on
about the events that took place or students reading many chapters of a thick book. A big misconception
about history is that it’s just about dead people. Most history lessons involve students being only exposed
to topics about individuals that existed in the past. Students somehow think that history is just the
memorization of people, places, and dates not knowingly that history will help us to reconnect and reflect to the
changes in the past. But for me, history helps me to learn the significance of the event that took place and how
it’s impacted the future. Even though it is a fact that history happened in the past, it’s far from irrelevant.
The notion that history will never be used in your lifetime is untrue. After all, without the past, there
wouldn’t be a future.
