Passive voice

Active voice: To describe what someone or something does


Ø Maria prepares breakfast everyday

Passive voice: To describe what happens to someone or something


Ø Breakfast is prepared by Maria everyday

Uses:
Ø To describe processes
Ø In more formal or written language / investigation reports
Ø To avoid saying who is responsible

If we want to say who or what does the action in a passive sentence,


we often use by.

Structure:
Subject + verb “to be” + past participle + complement (by) + Object
pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, them)

Active Maria prepares breakfast


Passive Breakfast is prepared by Maria

Active: We drink water in the morning


Passive: Water is drunk by us in the morning

Passive voice verb tense structures

Present simple Sub. + am / is / are + past participle


Present continuous Sub. + am / is / are + being + past participle
Past simple Sub. + was / were + past participle
Present perfect Sub. + has / have + been + past participle
Past perfect Sub. + had + been + past participle
Modal verbs Sub. + can + be + past participle

Passive: Two letters have been written by her

Active: Mateo had cooked lunch last night

Active: Robinson can play the piano


Passive: The piano can be played by Robinson

Active: Jenny doesn’t read books at night


Passive: Books are not read by Jenny at night

Active: She didn’t open the doors


Passive: The doors weren’t opened by her

Active: Have they eaten sushi before?


Passive: Has sushi been eaten by them before?

Active: Does Ludy walk 3 kilometers every day?


Passive: Are 3 kilometers walked by Ludy every day?

Active: Can Brayan speak 2 languages?


Passive: Can 2 languages be spoken by Brayan?

Active: He hadn’t done the homework


Passive: The homework had not been done by him

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences in passive voice.


1. He can play the piano. – The piano can be played by him
2. She bought four apples – Four apples were bought by her
3. She has paid a lot of money. – A lot of money has been paid by her
4. I can draw a picture. – A picture can be drown by me
5. The police didn’t arrest the thieves – The thieves weren’t arrested by the
police
6. They haven’t helped you. – You haven’t been helped by them
7. He doesn't open the book. – The book isn’t opened by him
8. You haven’t written the letter. – The letter hasn’t been written by you
9. Oliver taught the children – The children were taught by Oliver
10. Does the police officer catch the thief? – Is the thief caught by the police
officer?

Passive Voice – Present, Past and Future Simple


Instruction: Rewrite the sentences in passive voice.
1. Mr. Jones doesn’t do the dishes. The dishes aren’t done by Mr. Jones
2. The people have spoken English. English has been spoken by the people
3. Can he read comics? Can comics be read by him?
4. We won’t play volleyball. Volleyball won’t be played by us
5. They didn’t sing the song. The song was not sung by them
