Combined Signal Automaton 10+SGA
for the release of sound and light signals 1/5
of whistle, signal lamp, bell and gong
including “GENERAL EMERGENCY ALARM”

The Signal Automaton 10+SGA allows the automatic release of ten different signals according
to Rule 34 (a, b, d) and Rule 35 (a, b, c, e, g) of the Colreg 1972 and for general emergency
alarm through an external key.

At the same time the signal automaton serves as automatic control for the:

1. white maneuver signal lamp (visibility range at least 5 nautical miles)

2. automatic bell

3. automatic gong, for vessel 100 m or more in length

4. general emergency alarm and abandon ship (connection to whistle I on radar mast)

The following signals can be released:

Maneuvring signals:

Rule 34 (a) and (b)

1. …one short blast - course alteration to starboard

2. …two short blasts - course alteration to port
3. …three short blasts - operating astern propulsion

Each of the above mentioned signals will at the same time once be released acoustically and
optically. After at least 10 seconds the same signal will be repeated only as a light signal.
When the maneuver is finished, the off key "O" must be pushed for switching off.

4. Rule 34 (d)

When vessels in sight of one another are approaching each other and from any cause either
vessel fails to understand the intentions or actions of the other, or is in doubt whether
sufficient action is being taken by the other to avoid collision, the vessel in doubt shall
immediately indicate such doubt by giving at least five short and rapid blasts of the whistle.
Such signal may be supplemented by a light signal of at least five short and rapid flashes.

Sound signals in restricted visibility:

5. Rule 35 (a)
...one prolonged blast at intervals of not more than 2 minutes:
- a power-driven vessel making way through water

6. Rule 35 (b)
...two prolonged blasts in succession with an interval of about 2 seconds between them:
- a power-driven vessel underway but stopped and making no way through water

7. Rule 35 (c)
...three blasts in succession, namely one prolonged followed by two short blasts:
- a vessel not under command, a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver, a vessel
constrained by her draught, a sailing vessel, a vessel engaged in towing or pushing
another vessel
(Can optionally be replaced by Morse „U“ for offshore stuctures acc. to IALA.)

of whistle, signal lamp, bell and gong
including “GENERAL EMERGENCY ALARM”

8. Rule 35 (e)
…four blasts in succession, namely one prolonged followed by three short blasts:
- a vessel towed or if more than one vessel is towed the last vessel of the tow

9. Rule 35 (g)
…rapid ringing of bell for 5 seconds at intervals of 1 minute:
- a vessel at anchor
…supplemented by rapid sounding of gong for 5 seconds at intervals of 1 minute
- a vessel at anchor which is more than 100 m in length

9.1. A vessel at anchor may in addition sound three blasts in succession, namely one short, one
prolonged and one short blast.

10. Rule 37 Annex IV-SOS

emergency signal SOS repeated continuously.

11. Signal MOB (man over board)

three prolonged blasts in succession repeated continuously.

Additional acoustic and optic signals can be released manually by at will push-buttons.

Operation of the Signal Automaton 10+SGA

After installation and electric connection on board of the vessel, the automaton is in stand-by
mode unless there is an interruption of the power supply. The stand-by mode is indicated by
illuminated symbols of all signal keys, except for the red indicating LEDs which will be
illuminated only when a program has been selected.

Attention!

Before selecting a new program, the key “I/O” must be hit to delete the preceeding program. All
at will keys for manual sound signal release have priority. Hitting any of the at will keys for
manual sound signal release will cut off the running automatic program.

The operating elements take the following functions:

Signal keys in 1st row from left to right:

1st key - switching on/off of the automatic maneuver signals (Rule 34…)
Activation of this function is indicated by a red LED next to the key.

2nd key - preselection of the different maneuver signals

light signals until switched off by 1st key (Rule 34 b, i)

- "I am operating astern propulsion" (Rule 34 a)

light signals until switched off by 1st key (Rule 34 b, i)

Symbol indication: “General Emergency Alarm” (on top) and “Abandon Ship” (normally stand-by / flashes when
activated by external push-button).

3rd key - switching on/off of automatic bell and gong signals in restricted visibility (Rule 35 g).
Activation of this function is indicated by a red LED next to the key.

Signal keys in 2nd row from left to right:

1st key - all manual sound signals

2nd key - switching on/off of maneuver signal lamp, so as to accompany all sound signals by
light signals if requested

3rd key - all manual light signals

4th key - four-stage adjustment of key illumination (dimmer)

Keys in 3rd row from left to right:

1st key - switching on/off of automatic signals in restricted visibility (Rule 35…)

Maintenance

The Signal Automaton 10+SGA is maintenance-free.

Power supply from board mains must be disconnected whenever carrying out installation or
repair work.

Signal durations are works adjusted in conformity with Rule 34 and 35 of the COLREG 1972 .
Alteration of signal duration or program release or the programming of special signals may only
be carried out by skilled personnel.

Trouble shooting and fault deletion

Manual signal release is not possible and key illumination fails.

1. Check correct connection of terminals 2+3 to power supply indicated on the name plate.

2. Check fuses F1 and F2 which are accessible from the reverse of the signal automaton.
As replacement only use fine wire fuses 2A, semi-time lag, 250 V, 5 x 20 mm.

3. If above measures lead to no result, membrane keyboard, control PCB, power supply PCB
can easily be replaced. For this purpose first remove the front frame and then the terminal
strips on the reverse of the signal automaton. Then unloose the 4 screws in the front plate
and remove it forwards. The front plate carries the PCBs.
