Improper Waste Disposal in Every Household in Barangay Kumintang Ilaya, Batangas City

Anna Famodulan 2020

People are suffering environmental dilemmas such as global warming, flash floods, and etc. and the
causes of these problem is the misbehavior of the people towards waste management. Some people are
careless to the environment by just in throwing their garbage everywhere they want. They do not think
of the possible results of their actions on the environmental as especially on health. The soil, water, and
air pollution can all be a result of improper waste disposal. Examples of improper waste disposal
includes littering, hazardous waste that is dumped into the ground, and not recycling items that should
be recycled. Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems.
Proper garbage disposal is important to ensure everyone's safety from possible health hazards. People
will suffer in the next years of existence if we continue this kind of activity. There are causes and effects
of improper waste disposal.

Some causes of improper waste disposal are:

People are unaware of consequences of their irresponsible acts.

People are not following the correct rules of proper waste disposal. People throw the garbage in what
place they want and they have no care what will be the effect of it.

People are burning plastic instead of keeping it and recyclable it.

The effects of improper waste disposal are:

The soil contamination does not only affect plant growth, it is also unhealthy to humans and animals
feeding on those plants.

The skin irritation and blood infections resulting from direct contact with waste, and transmitting
bacteria from waste to infected wounds.

Waste that releases dioxins are also dangerous and pose a health risk when they diffuse into the air that
we breathe.

How to solve/avoid the improper waste disposal?

Littering

Rosalinda L. Orosa (The Philippine Star) - April 13, 2014 - 12:00am

It’s sad. But it shows we are a nation of litterers. litters are in the streets, parks, markets, schools,
neighborhoods, terminals, ports, jeepneys, buses, taxis and even inside subdivisions and shopping
malls.

After social gatherings like celebration of the Independence Day, feast of the Black Nazarene, EI
Shaddai, rallies, meetings and other festivities, expect truck loads of litters scattered around. Yes,
litters everywhere, it seems normal. But in the Manila Bay not only litters but also garbage. Manila
Bay is known the world over for its sunset. We should maintain its cleanliness for it’s a show
window of our country. It’s shameful to foreign guests.

It’s shameful but it seems littering is a habit. It’s part of life of many Filipinos. There are also
foreigners doing the same. They think it’s the practice here, but not in their country. There are
antilittering laws, but why littering is unstoppable? We see people walking just throw their litters
around, others while at their cars, or in public vehicles or wherever they are.

There are street cleaners sweeping the streets of litters. But minutes later we see litters again and
more litters as hours pass by. Why despite anti-littering laws and ordinances, litters still exist? How
can we stop littering? Are the anti-littering laws and ordinances ineffective?

What should be done to stop the littering habit of many?

To stop the littering habit strict implementation of anti-littering laws and ordinances should be
enforced. Anti-littering laws and ordinances should be amended to make them more effective.
We suggest that all business establishments be required to provide trash cans in the streets, also in all
vehicles, in street corners of subdivisions, and in all other areas where there are people.

In short, install trash cans in all necessary areas. Trash cans ready to all litters.

With trash cans everywhere, start strict implementation of anti-littering laws and anti-littering agents
should be everywhere. Those caught littering should be penalized and should render community
service. Those apprehended for littering should stay in a place where people can see them. Require
them to sweep the streets, parks and other areas. Barangays, towns, cities and provinces should
endorse cleanliness contest. There should be the cleanest barangay, town, city and province. And to
push all concerned, the contest will also proclaim the dirtiest barangay, town, city and province. By
proclaiming the dirtiest barangay, town, city, and province, all concerned will try their best not to be
included in the dirtiest category.

Or whatever measures legislative bodies may deem appropriate to make anti-littering laws be more
effective. — LEONARDO C. CANTA, B10 L83 Dahlia Street, Camella Sorrento, Bacoor City, Cavite

Environmental group scores littering, smoking in polling places

By EcoWaste Coalition

Published on May 14, 2018

QUEZON CITY, May 14 -- As the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections get
underway, a waste and pollution watchdog reiterated its appeal to the electorate to keep the polling
places litter-free, as well as smoke-free.

“The schools where most of the polling precincts are located should be free from garbage and tobacco
pollution. We therefore urge the public not to pollute the school environment with litter and smoke,”
stated Daniel Alejandre, Zero Waste Campaigner, EcoWaste Coalition.

“We have to issue this last-minute reminder after finding sample ballots and other campaign
materials scattered in some polling places in Makati and Manila, especially at the school entrance,” he
said.
“In one school in Manila, we even find supporters of some candidates smoking inside the school
compound,” he added.

“With voting to continue until 3:00 pm, school heads can still do something to ensure full observance
of their ‘no littering,’ ‘no smoking’ policy. The least they can do is to grab the microphone and make
the necessary public announcement against dropping litter and smoking within the school facilities,”
he said.

The group also appealed to the members of the electoral board, poll watchers, poll volunteers, and
other election stakeholders to be mindful of their discards.

“Kindly put your discards into their dedicated receptacles. Most schools will have segregated waste
bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable discards. Please use them properly and do not simply
leave your beverage and food containers and leftovers inside the polling areas,” Alejandre said.

The EcoWaste Coalition noted that the Department of Education has promulgated policies towards
the promotion of litter-free and tobacco-free schools.

Under DepEd Order No. 5, series of 2014, schools are enjoined to conduct activities that will enforce
the prohibition on littering and burning of wastes as per Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid
Waste Management Act.

DepEd Order No. 48, series of 2016, on the other hand, reiterates the smoking ban in school premises,
as well as compliance monitoring of tobacco control measures for stores outside the schools.

why Europe’s garbage burning is a big

Reports have shown that incinerators in Europe release dioxin, one of the most toxic chemicals known
to man. When pollution is not released into the air, it’s captured in toxic ash. In fact, Sweden was
recently exposed for dumping their toxic incinerator ash on an island off Norway.

What is Open Burning?

Open burning is the burning of unwanted material in the open air where smoke and toxic fumes are
released into the atmosphere directly, therefore, affecting the environment. Often, the practice is
done outdoors where house hold waste materials are burnt as a means of waste disposal, away from
an incinerator or a furnace chamber. The lack of a chimney or stack predisposes the atmosphere to
more air pollution from the open burning.

The burnt material is released, unregulated, and in its raw form into the atmosphere. Materials such
as plastics have some toxic chemicals which once pre-disposed in the air; they pose not only a danger
to the environment but also become a health concern for life. This article will pinpoint the various
implications of open burning on both the environment and human health and on the various ways it
can be stopped. 2020 Conserve Energy Future

Garbage: To Burn or To Bury

David Tenenbaum, The Why Files3.29.11

Wisconsin, USA — Europe burns heaps of garbage, getting lots of electricity and some heat. The
United States does not. Proponents say incineration shrinks the waste and produces heat and
electricity while reducing the need for landfills and the diesel-drinking trucks tasked with taking trash
to often-distant burial grounds.

These folks acknowledge that incinerators were rather dirty 25 years ago, but note that current air
emissions are below Environmental Protection Agency standards. In a modern garbage incinerator, a
complex set of filters removes heavy metals and other pollutants; high-temperature operation
reduces the output of ultra-toxic dioxins.

The Burning Problem Of China's Garbage

February 20, 20178:43 AM ET

Rob Schmitz 2016

Trash is piling up in China — more than 520,000 tons a day. China's government has concluded the
best way to get rid of it is to burn it at incinerators like this one, the Gao'antun incinerator power
plant run by the Chaoyang district of Beijing.

"Our emissions from burning the garbage are well below EU standards, and our technology is ahead of
incinerators in the U.S.," says Chen Hui, the plant's chief engineer.

This incinerator was opened nine months ago. The heat from burning garbage at more than 1,000
degrees Celsius produces enough electricity to power more than 140,000 homes.

As a result, they're burning garbage the cheapest way possible, filling China's skies with an unknown
amount of cancer-causing heavy metal and dioxin emissions. China doesn't publicly release emissions
data from its incinerators.

Does Burning Trash Make it Disappear?

Backyard trash burning is a common method to dispose of garbage, particularly in rural areas. This
website provides information about:

Health concerns from backyard trash burning

Better trash disposal options available to you

Backyard burning of trash in a barrel, pile or outdoor boiler releases smoke into the air. The content of
the smoke depends on the trash that went into the fire, the temperature of the fire and the available
oxygen.

Trash fires in burn barrels can smolder and as a result produce greater amounts of harmful chemicals
in the smoke. Harmful chemicals can also be present in the ash.

Different Waste Management Traditions

iPoint (2018)

The “waste management” reality in most places of the world equals no separation, no controlled
collection. Dump your stuff next to the street outside the village, like your ancestors always did, and
you’re fine. When all the efforts to burn fail (which they usually do), cover the remaining pile with a
thin layer of earth and ignore the horrible smell. The method has been around for centuries and it
worked very well until recently: Self-sufficient agricultural societies traditionally took all their goods
from nature. Because those goods were 100% biodegradable, nothing happened when they were
dumped – they simply returned to nature. This is the tried and tested waste management system of
the developing world. The problems began when 20th century inventions were injected into this
system, inhibiting the cycle from continuing to function the way it used to. Plastic packaging, oil
containers, tires, batteries, electronics – they all interfere with nature’s absorption capacity. In the
same way these products originate from an artificial production cycle, they require an artificial
treatment at the end of their lifespans. However, even as fast as these “new” products conquer new
markets, the awareness of the need for a change in waste management is inversely slow.
