SDG REFLECTION

Hunger

I define hunger as the feeling of being unable to eat when you’re body needs the nutrients
and energy of food. Honestly, I feel hungry every day, however, I can provide a remedy to my
hunger. Whenever I feel hungry I can easily go to the kitchen and grab a bite. However, for our
less fortunate communities, this is not the case. They face hunger every day and they can’t
simply waltz to their kitchen and eat. They have to ask for food on the streets and divide the little
amount of food they have to their family members. As a country, we experience hunger
especially now in this pandemic, especially for the poverty-stricken communities, because they
can’t easily generate enough income anymore to support themselves. They have to depend on the
government or the private sectors for their food and money donations to support their families.
I’ve seen a lot of posts in social media of these people that are asking for food especially during
the ECQ (because it’s prohibited to leave the house). It is really heart-breaking to see this in our
country. Now, whenever I see street children or beggars, I make sure to give them food as much
as I can.

Poverty

The Philippines is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. More than a
quarter of the population lives in poverty. This is the sad reality of our country. Poverty means
not being able to afford basic necessities. The reasons behind this are the scarcity of employment
opportunities, environmental disasters, and population growth. I strongly believe that access to
quality education is closely linked to poverty. If people have educational attainment, they can
easily find jobs. If they have jobs, they earn a stable income. If they have a stable income, they
can provide for themselves. Thus, I believe poverty can be eliminated by providing free access to
quality education to everyone. By providing free education, the government should also provide
food and good facilities for the students to maintain their education. I’ve been exposed to charity
work in school and in my organization, and I’ve been exposed to poor communities. It is really
sad to see their living conditions. I aspire to help in every possible way I can to lessen their
burden. Although they are poor, they are one of the happiest people I met which clearly shows
the Filipinos’ resilience.

Equality

I define equality as having the same rights and treatment as others. We can see inequality
in the workforce; women earn relatively lesser than men, and women are given less promotional
opportunities to be in high positions in the workplace. Also, the discrimination of the LGBTQA+
community. I believe that gay rights are equivalent to human rights. I’ve seen a lot of people
discriminating or bullying against gay people in social media and everywhere. I’ve seen harsh

stares on gay couples and I believe we should stop this and be accepting to the LGBTQA+
community. They’re still humans and should be treated the same way as straight people. I really
advocate for the Anti-discrimination of the LGBTQA+ community because I believe they
deserve the same treatment that I have.

Life - Good and Bad

Life is composed of good and bad moments. There will be good days and bad days.
Living a good life for me means living a comfortable life with few problems or worries. I
believe I live in a comfortable life, and I am beyond grateful for that. I only worry about my
personal problems and my academics. However, I still share my blessings with others by
participating in volunteer work, and by giving alms to beggars. I’m not necessarily saying that
people living an uncomfortable or poor life mean a bad life. Poor people can have a good life by
being happy with their families. I believe I define a bad life as living a life with misery and
regret. This is why SDGs are really important because they are the blueprint to achieve a better
and sustainable future for all. SDGs means giving a good life for everyone. Leaving no one
behind.
