These systems are single fluid / low pressure type of Water Mist system designed in
accordance with IMO MSC Circ 1165, and is suitable for various fire protection
applications in machinery rooms with a maximum room volume of 3842 m3.
The system design is based on using water mist nozzles which are Certified by DNV, and
by Factory Mutual.
The DNV certificate describes in detail how the nozzles shall be installed:
The nozzles shall have a nozzle pressure of 8 Bar, and will give a flow of 15,84 lpm each
at this pressure.
The nozzles must have a maximum spacing of 3 x 3 metres, and must be installed not
more than 1,5 meter from a wall.
Maximum nozzle installation height is 10 metres.
These water mist systems can be designed as open skids as shown above, or as enclosed
and heated units.
A pump set which is fed by water from an atmospheric water tank reservoir which
could be part of the package supplied by FPE, or it could be connected to an
existing suitable reservoir.
A piping manifold arrangement
Automatically released water mist valves ( deluge release valves)
By-pass and test valve arrangement.
Necessary instrumentation

1 Technical description
This type of system is fully designed to Client Specifications. The design shown above
must be seen as an example. The number of protected zones will vary with the Client
Requirement.
As an alternative to the shown example where the water pumps are made part of the
valve skid design, the pumps skid can also be made as a separate unit.
The water supply tank could be a fresh water tank specially made for the purpose, or it
could be an existing fresh water tank used also for other purposes.
The system may be designed with a back-up connection to the firewater system to make
it possible to extend the operation of the system by use of firewater after the fresh water
reservoir has been exhausted.
The water mist nozzles used are VID K6 which are low pressure nozzles which gives a
water mist where minimum 90% of all water mass sprayed has a droplet size < 300
microns.
Fine Water Spray has several advantages when compared with other agents. The
advantages are:
it is environmentally benign
it is safe for personnel
system testing and accidental releases are inexpensive
it is easy to maintain
it is reliable
it is clean
it will cause very limited damage
