SUPERVISION
MAED-EM DR. MARIA CRISTINA MARASIGAN

Reflection #1

Changing concept of Supervision and instruction in the Philippine Context.

‘Supervision’ comprises two words, namely ‘super’, that is, superior or extra, and ‘vision’, that
is, sight or perspective. The literal meaning of the term ‘supervision’ is to ‘oversee’ or ‘to
inspect the work of other persons’. Thus, ‘supervision’ refers to an act by which any person
inspects or supervises the work of other people, that is, whether they are working properly or
not. Supervision is primarily concerned with overseeing or watching the performance of
workers under his control. He plays an important role in the management set up. He is the
person who is directly connected with the workers and acts as a vital link between the
management and workers.

Through the effective supervision of instruction, administrators can reinforce and enhance
teaching practices that will contribute to improved student learning. By skillfully analyzing
performance and appropriate data, administrators can provide meaningful feedback and
direction to teachers that can have a profound effect on the learning that occurs in each
classroom. Because student learning is the primary function of the schools, the effective
supervision of instruction is one of the most critical functions of the administrator. If schools
are to provide equal access to quality educational programs for all students, administrators
must hold teachers accountable for providing an appropriate and well-planned program. These
programs include a variety of teaching strategies designed to meet the diverse needs of all
students in our complex society.

Supervision today faces a challenging period in its development. As the number of people
involved in supervision enlarges and as the complexity of the whole educational scene
increases, it becomes necessary for those concerned with supervision to clarify the thinking in
the field in order that purposes may be clearly seen and the implications of these purposes for
the immediate future be understood. It would doubtless be possible for supervision to continue
to exist for some time as it is commonly found today an aid to doing more efficiently the task
the schools have already undertaken to perform. Certainly any institution as large as the school
is in need of coordination and effort toward efficiency in the changing concept of supervision
and instruction especially in Philippines context.

Changes in the supervisory thought in Educational Processes.

Supervisory practice has evolved since its origins in colonial times, and its effectiveness as a
means of improving instruction depends on the ability of educational leaders to remain
responsive to the needs of teachers and students. An educational leader’s resolve to remain
adaptable also depends on an appreciation of the changing and evolving nature of supervision,
especially in the new millennium. An educational leader who understands the history of
supervision and how current demands are influenced by that history will be better able to
confront the technological, social, political, and moral issues of the day. Educational leaders
also will have to develop the requisite knowledge, skills, and dispositions that are the
foundation for effective supervisory practice.
