Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Missing Parts and Totals

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.OA.8 determine the unknown whole number in an addition or
subtraction equation relating to three whole numbers.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://create.kahoot.it/v2/details/899f04f3-c8fc-4eb5-8094-
712425ec4929

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to this activity students will have watched an introductory video on what the difference of parts and
totals are and then once they have a strong understanding of what parts and totals of an equation are then I
will tell them to get out their devices and to go to Kahoot.it and put the access code in.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: (What will the students do? What will the
teacher do? What materials are needed? How long with the activity last?)
During the SRT activity the students will put in the access code and participate in the Kahoot that I have
created about the parts and totals of an equation. The questions will have a set time that the students will be
able to answer and will be shown to the students one by one. This is a great tool because while the students
think it’s a game they will receive feedback on if their answer was correct or not and then the teacher can
discuss what the correct answer was and why. The materials needed during the activity is the students
devices and if the teacher has access to it a SMART board that the students can see the question on a bigger
screen at once. This activity will take around 5 to 10 minutes depending on how much discussion is between
each question.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. 7+?=13
2. 6+3=?
3. 15-9=?
4. 8+5=?
5. ?+5=16
6. 8+?=17
7. 19-11=?
8. 7+4=?
9. ?+8=14
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes because Kahoot! has it where it will automatically show the correct answer after each question.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity students will have a review on what the difference of the parts and totals are but in
general will have a better understanding of how to solve for different missing parts in an equation.
How will the data be used?
The understanding of the different missing numbers of an equation will be collected after the Kahoot! and can
be retested throughout the week to review for a test. The data will be used to show the teacher which
students have a strong understanding of the topic and which students need more support. This data will not
be a grade each time, but it is a review for a summative grade at the end of the week. The students will be
able to see how they are doing each time and when the students take the test at the end of the week the
parents will be able to see their students understanding of the topic.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity
My personal goal for this activity is that students will have an understanding of the topic before the
summative assessment at the end of the week. While doing this activity throughout the week it is my hope to
see students improve on their understanding and fluency of the topic.

Reflective Practice:
I think this activity will impact the students learning because with the repetition of this activity along with the
activity being a game it will show improvement drastically throughout the week. To further extend this
activity I would let students know that they will be assessed on this topic at the end of the week.
