Task 2.

8 (Assessment Criteria P12)

I. Preparing cable ends

A power cable is an electrical cable, an assembly of one or more electrical conductors, usually held
together with an overall sheath. The assembly is used for transmission of electrical power. Power cables
may be installed as permanent wiring within buildings, buried in the ground, run overhead, or exposed.

Below is given the procedures that need to be followed to prepare a cable for fitting purposes:

• Before starting electrical work, we need to ensure our safety by wearing required protective
equipment. In this case electrical gloves are mostly needed which will prevent us from electrical shock.

• To preparing wire ends we need some necessary tools and equipment which should be
arranged. At first take a cable and properly hold it and point out the cable from where we want to make
that cable ends. Remove the oversheath and the wire-armor. Separate the wire armor and bend the
wires away from the cable, place the support ring under the armor at each side of the joint. Cut back the
cable insulation.

• Remove the insulation from each of the conductor. The measurement of the removing area is
depending upon the work. Then we have to cut that measured area by using wire striper or wire cutter.
To cut that measured area by using wire striper we need to place that wire into wire striper and then
press the wire striper correctly. Then we just have to remove the insulated skin from the wire. If in any
case wire is not striped properly or during wire striping the wire get damaged then it should be better to
cut that wire and start it from the beginning. We can also use wire cutter to strip the wire.

II. Splicing an inline connection

This is a joining method of two electrical cables through soldering. The processes which are done are
given below:

• At first, we need to wear protective equipment to ensure safety measure and need to arrange
all the necessary tools and equipment for splicing. The necessary tools and accessories required for
splice joints are as followed:

o Wire cutter

o Wire striper

o Wire crimper

o Heat shrinks

o Soldering iron
• Before splicing an inline connection, we have to switch off the electrical connection. Then we
need to cut the wire by using wire cutter.

• After that we have to decide that how much wire we need to strip, although it will totally
depend on what kind of work we are doing. Then we have to strip the wire or remove the insulated skin
by using wire striper or wire cutter. If by any chance the wire is not properly cut off then it should be
better if we cut the wire end and strip that again.

• Before splicing the wire, we need to think about how we cover the non-insulated area. If we
cover the non-insulated area by using heat shrink then we need to push that heat shrink into the wire
before soldering.
