Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923), Return from Fishing (1894)

We considered the work of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida named “Return from Fishing of
(1894)” as a representational work basically because it represents objects or events in the real
world, and from which we can easily name and recognize. The artwork shows a precisely
detailed portrayal of the complex, strenuous, and primitive working conditions of the local
fishermen of Valencia, in which they still use a team of oxen to haul their boats up the beach.
Just imagine and consider how difficult this task is, and how dangerous it must have been
dealing with these outrageous animals, and several tons of wooden boat, in winds and waves.
With this, the work was considered as representational as illustrates an event happening in a
certain place and also making the viewers experience somewhat feel the happenings in it as
well.
Pier and Ocean (Composition No. 10) 1915 by Piet Mondrian

The artwork of Piet Mondrian entitled “Pier and Ocean of 1915” was probably one of the
most abstracted artworks in history. It shows a great balance of minimalistic colors (black and
white) and lines (horizontal and vertical) which seems not to represent something in reality.
However, with a little creativity, awareness, subjectivity, and imagination in our mind, it can be
distinguished that the horizontal lines allude the horizon from which the sea can be seen and
the vertical lines evoke the pilings in the human-made pier. The rhythms created by these
alternating lines with varying lengths depict the pulse of the ocean waves conveying the
impression of peace; the stillness of the soul. Nonetheless, these interpretations are all
subjective since it was based on one’s perspective and not to the creator itself.

This kind of artwork deviates from the concept that art relies on representation or
mimesis to any extent. Anyhow, it shows a great sense of nonfigurative and nonobjective art
that indicated a departure from reality. Thus, making this as an example of nonrepresentational
art.
