Mid-Semester Examination Spring-2020
Program: B.Sc. in EEE

Course Title: Signals and Linear Systems Course No. EEE 303 Credit: 3.00
Time: 1.00 Hour. Full Mark: 60
There are Four Questions. Answer three questions including Q-1 and Q-2.

1. a. Determine whether the following signal is a power signal or energy signal. If it is [7+5
a power signal then determine its power, otherwise determine its energy. =12]

Also, determine whether the following signal is periodic. If so, find its period.
𝑥(𝑡) = 4 sin(2𝜋𝑡/3) + cos(𝜋𝑡)
b. Sketch the following signal. [8]
𝑥(𝑡) = 3𝑢(𝑡 + 5) − 2𝑢(𝑡 + 3) − 𝑢(𝑡 + 2) + 𝑢(𝑡) + 2𝑢(𝑡 − 2) − 3𝑢(𝑡 − 4)
2. a. Using the characteristics of a unit impulse function, find the values of following [5+5
expressions. =10]
4 3 2
(i) 𝑦(𝑡) = ∫−2(𝑡 + 𝑡 + 2) 𝛿(1 − 2𝑡)𝑑𝑡
2 3
(ii) 𝑦(𝑡) = ∫−1(𝑡 2 + 3𝑡) 𝛿 (𝑡 − 2) 𝑑𝑡

b. State whether the following signal 𝑥(𝑡) is an odd signal or an even signal or none. [10]
If none, then sketch the even and odd parts of 𝑥(𝑡).

3. a. Find whether the system represented by following equation is (i) linear or not, (ii) [5+5
time-invariant or not. =10]
𝑦(𝑡) = cos 𝑡 . 𝑥(𝑡)
b. Find the step response of the system represented by following figure, where [7+3
ℎ1 (𝑡) = 2δ(𝑡 + 2) − 3δ(𝑡 + 1), and ℎ2 (𝑡) = δ(𝑡 − 2). Sketch 𝑦(𝑡). =10]

4. a. Find whether the following systems are causal or non-causal. [4+4
=8]
𝑥(3𝑡); 𝑡<0
(i) 𝑦(𝑡) = {
x(𝑡 − 1); 𝑡≥0

(ii) 𝑦(𝑡) = sin(𝑡 + 1) . 𝑥(𝑡 − 1)

b. The cross correlation, 𝑅 of two different signals is defined as, [4+4

𝑅𝑥𝑦 (𝑡) = ∫ 𝑥(𝜏) 𝑦(𝜏 − 𝑡)𝑑𝜏 = ∫ 𝑥(𝜏 + 𝑡) 𝑦(𝜏)𝑑𝜏 12]

Show that -
(i) 𝑅𝑥𝑦 (𝑡) = 𝑥(𝑡) ∗ 𝑦(−𝑡).
(ii) 𝑅𝑥𝑦 (𝑡) does not obey the commutative law, that means
𝑅𝑥𝑦 (𝑡) ≠ 𝑅𝑦𝑥 (𝑡).
(iii) 𝑅𝑥𝑦 (𝑡) is symmetric, that means 𝑅𝑥𝑦 (𝑡) = 𝑅𝑦𝑥 (−𝑡)
