Pipeline Performance Heavy Aggregate Inventory Management

1. Purpose
This procedure defines the standardized methodology for surveying and management of heavy
aggregate inventory.

2. Scope
Compliance to this procedure is a requirement for all Pipeline Performance locations storing
and managing heavy aggregates at both onsite and off-site locations.

3. Definitions / References
Definitions
Heavy aggregates: iron ore, metal slags and equivalent aggregates that are used as the main raw
material component for negative buoyancy weight pipe coatings.
Stockpiles: bulk accumulations of heavy aggregate inventory, usually freestanding in an open
environment.
Volumetric survey: geometric, quantitative assessment to determine the volume of material stockpiles.
Bulk density: defined as the dry weight of an aggregate per unit volume of aggregate.

4. Heavy aggregate storage

For sites that do not store heavy aggregate material on a concrete pad, the base shall be levelled and
compacted before receipt of material, allowing for a 0.5-2.0% gradient to allow for natural rain water
runoff and avoiding pooling around the foot of the stockpile. Heavy aggregates will be stored in
separate stockpiles by material type.

Prior to the establishment of a new stockpile a baseline survey should be conducted (see
section 5.1) that includes any additional bedding material above the finished grade of the
storage area.

5. Inventory Management
Heavy aggregate inventory is managed by calculating the quantity of the stockpile (in metric tons) and
reconciling this against the book value (received quantity minus usage to date). Calculating the
quantity of heavy aggregate in the stockpile is achieved as follows;
𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉𝑉 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 𝑥𝑥 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ℎ𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 (𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚) =
1000
Example (assumed values):
Volume of Stockpile: 3400 m3
Iron Ore Bulk Density: 2960.5 kg/m3
3400 𝑚𝑚3 𝑥𝑥 2960.5 kg/m3
𝑄𝑄𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ℎ𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 (𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚) = =10 066 mt
1000

5.1 Volumetric Survey

All surveys are to be based on a locally known, established and accepted horizontal and vertical
benchmark, and are to be related to the coordinate system and vertical datum in effect for that
monument. Redundancy for absolute accuracy is to be achieved by obtaining observations to, at a
minimum, one additional locally known benchmark. Appropriate survey methodology is to be used to
obtain a minimum relative accuracy of +/- 0.02m horizontally and vertically. Dependant on the
methodology used, sufficient redundant observations are to be obtained to ensure the relative accuracy
requirements are met. The methodology shall be submitted in writing by the surveying contractor to
Shawcor for approval. Once approved the same methodology shall be used for subsequent surveys at
that location until an alternative methodology is similarly approved.
A volumetric survey is required to be completed for each stockpile > 1000mt in accordance with as a
minimum at the following intervals;
a. Within 4 weeks after completion of the coating project the stockpile was allocated to. If the
stockpile is allocated to more than one coating project, the volumetric survey may be
completed after the string of coating projects.
b. 12 months after last stockpile usage
c. 24 months after last stockpile usage
Note: plant operations may deem more frequent surveys as necessary. For stockpiles in continuous
use for multiple or large projects, quarterly surveying is recommended to provide accurate and up-to-
date reconciliations against usage.
As an alternate to conventional terrestrial survey methods laser scanning or Light Detection and
Ranging (LiDAR) technologies may be used. The methodology shall be submitted in writing by the
surveying contractor to Shawcor for approval. Once approved the same methodology shall be used for
subsequent surveys at that location until an alternative methodology is similarly approved.

Due to the risk of subgrade consolidation and settlement, a subgrade survey must be completed for
sites that do not store heavy aggregate material on a concrete pad. A minimum of 3 points on the
stockpile area must be cored and sampled, with at least two of these points representing the central or
primary area of the stockpile. The depth of continuous aggregate material must be measured for all 3
samples. As an alternative to coring, test excavations may be done if they adequately expose a
delineation of layers between the iron ore and bedding material. Ground penetrating radar may also be
used as an alternative to coring or excavation if a local service provider is able to demonstrate
capability to perform this testing in accordance with the most recent version of ASTM D6432 and
achieve credible results. A proposal for this method shall be submitted to Shawcor for approval. For all
subgrade surveys the revised baseline of the pile shall be taken as the mean value of the data
collected.
For all volumetric calculations for stockpiles not on a concrete pad a correction is required for boundary
layer contamination at the bottom of the stockpile. For stockpiles established on flexible pavements
such as compacted gravel the bottom 50 mm of the stockpile shall be considered contaminated and
unusable. For stockpiles using a non-compacted bedding material the bottom 200 mm shall be
considered contaminated and unusable.

5.2. Bulk Density

Bulk Density (per ASTM C-29) for each aggregate shall be used to calculate the specific tonnage of the
stockpiles. Aggregate shall be dried in accordance with ASTM C29, 7.1. In ASTM C-29, follow the
Jigging Procedure 11 and Calculation 13.1 to determine the results. An example calculation is shown
on the next page. (According to ASTM C29, jigging procedure is used for aggregate >37.5 mm max
size), however jigging may do a better job at representing the consolidation of aggregate in a stockpile
compared to rodding.

5.3 Inventory reconciliation

A reconciliation between the book quantity and surveyed quantity must be completed. To allow for
measurement system variation; if the surveyed quantity is within +/-10% of the book value, the book
value will be considered accurate and no adjustment is required.
If the surveyed quantity is not within +/- 10% of the book value, an adjustment equal to the quantity out
with the 10% measurement system margin will be made to the book value.
The reconciliation must be approved at a minimum by the Plant Manager and the Finance Manager,
and will follow requirements of Shawcor Standard Procedures, SP 2050 and 2051.
