History and Introduction of Engineering

Materials
Materials: play very important role in society
• Transportation
• Housing
• Clothing
• Communication
• Entertainment

Various ages of the human history are named after materials

Stone age
• Ranged from 15000 BC to 2000 BC
• Creation and usage of stones as tools, weapons
• Wood and bones also used in this age

• Hunting purposes
Bronze age
• Extended between 3500-500 BC
• Marks the beginning of usage of
metals and metal working
• Bronze is basically copper mixed
with tin, which is stronger than
these individual metals
• Used widely for tools, weapons,
decoration etc.
Iron age
• Iron age began 3000 years ago
• Industrial evolution started in Europe was fueled by Iron
• Usage of Iron has changed very rapidly human development
• Improved mode of transportation.
Iron pillar of Delhi
• Constructed by Chandragupta II (reigned c.
375-415 CE), and now stands in the Qutb
complex in Delhi, India.

• Famous for the rust-resistant composition of

the metals used in its construction

• Prescence of phosphorus makes it more

corrosion resistant (formation of layer of
crystalline iron hydrogen phosphate hydrate)
Iron and Steel – Building blocks of human civilization
Time line Events
1500 AD Invention of Blast furnace – Production of pig iron
from ores
1855 AD Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-1898)

Bessemer steel making patent

20th Century Many other steel making processes –
e.g. Electric Arc, for making high quality
steels
Early 20th Century – The golden era
Time line Events
1886 AD Hall process- Electrochemical process for
extraction of Aluminium from Alumina (Light weight applications)
1890-1910 AD Revolution in Transportation – Discovery
of automobiles and Aero plane

1939 Process for making Nylon – Introduction of plastics

The Electronic revolution
Time line Events
1940s

Zone refining – A metallurgical

process to produce ultra pure Si
1960s Chip, the heart of electronics. Smaller and
smaller Si wafers – Miniaturization

1980s High temperature ceramic superconductors,

MRI Machine, Brain Scan –Major Advancement in Medical
science
Communication and Entertainment

• Smaller and smaller microchips have brought the whole world on our palm top

• The advent of new electronic, optical and optoelectronic materials has given new
dimension to entertainment
