Atharva-Veda

This sukta is considered to be very important in Atharva-Veda. In reality it is borrowed from


Rig-Veda, the mantras 1 to 8 of 125th sukta of 10th Adhyaya of the 10th Mandala. Devi
Atharvashirsha is a link between philosophy (Darshana) and techniques (Tantra).

It is a tradition to recite it before Durga Saptashati.

1] Om all the gods went to the divine mother goddess and with humility asked her :

Om great goddess who are you ??? she told the gods : I am the supreme being.from me the
male and female form. From me comes what is god and what is not good. I am happiness and
I am sorrow.i am science and I am non-science.

2] I am supreme knowledge should be known by all,and what should not be known by


Anyone.

3] What is sacred and what is not-sacred is also me.all that exists is me,ie whatever Exists is a
part of me.

4] I am the Vedas [ divine knowledge and spiritual knowledge ] is me and beyond the Vedas [
non divine non spiritual knowledge ] is also me.what is knowledge is me,and what is non-
knowledge is also me.what is natural is me,and what is non natural, what is
supernatural,extranatural Unnatural etc, is also me.above and below,and on all sides only I
exist.

5] I move around in the form of the rudras and vasus [ gods ].i move around in the form of
the various suns [ stars ] and the various gods of creation.i am and I nourish the various gods
like mithra,varun,indra [ king of gods ] fire [ ultimate purifier ] And both ashwinikumars [
the doctors of the gods ].

6] I hold / support soma,twashta,pusha,bhag [ various gods and earth ]. I hold/support


various gods of the creation,like Vishnu,brahma,prajapati [ lord of humans ] etc…

7] I hold/support/give to the offerers of the sacrificial offerings and wealth [ humans ]And
liquid offerings into the sacrificial fire.i am the lord-goddess of all creation,I give all type of
wealth to my worshippers,supreme form/supreme being, And I am One of the main gods for
worshipping at all times.i create in the Form of the soul,the upholder of the shy element
etc….my place is in the Core of the soul,[ the form of the soul ] which is the repository of all
knowledge.the one who knows me this way,he knows me and he reaches me and gets all
benefits.

8] At that time the gods said : we bow to the goddess,the great goddess,we bow to u always,of
great good one,we bow to u mother nature,we bow to you oh great protector – doer of
good,we bow to you again and again in an orderly way!

9] The gods spoke thus after this : to you who are radiant like the great fire [ golden coloured
] one who shines due to the knowledge she has and gives,the light of all creation,one who is
worshipped to attain the fruition of one's deeds,to you Oh mother durga we bow and
surrender.oh destroyer of all demons [ all negativeness and and all evil ] we bow to you and
we worship you.

10] The gods in the form of lifeforce,created the speech which many types of living beings use
to communicate.that is also a form of the divine mother.that goddess who is like the wish
fulfilling holy cow [ kamdhenu ] giver of unlimited bliss and joy,food,strength, Etc,she be
pleased by our prayers and salutations and come near to us,to bless us.

11]The destroyer of death,one who is praised by the Vedas,vishnu shakti,[energy of the all
pervading lord ] skandamata [ energy of the destroyer-shiva ] saraswati [ energy of lord
Bramha ],mother of all gods,aditi,sati,[daughter of king daksha ],she destroyer of all sins-
forever,does of eternal good-forever,to you we bow and we offer you our salutations.

12]We know mother mahalaxmi we meditate on the one who is all powerful that goddess who
is sarva shakti [ all energy ] Please bless us by keeping us occupied in divine work,related to
spiritualism And positivity.

13]Oh daksha,your daughter who is aditi she became pregnant and she gave birth to all the
deathless gods who are doer of good for humanity and all creations.

14] Pleasures,private parts,lotus,holder of thunder in hand [ indra –king of


gods]Anus,air,sky,king of gods,again private part,alphabet [ knowledge ] illusions and reality
this all doing and all soul mother of creation is the root of all that exists and she is the
supreme being.

15] This is the supreme god energy,she is attracter of all creation, goad,noose,bow,arrow,
holder.this is the shri maha vidya=the giver of wealth supreme knowledge giver of
salvation.one who knows the supreme goddess mother adi shakti in this way,that person
eliminates and overcomes all sorrow,and gains eternal bliss.

16] Mother,creator of All creation,we bow to u.mother please protect us in every way.

17] The rishi-seers who is seer of mantras,says thus : she is the Ashtavasu-8 directional
gods,she is the 11 rudras [ destroyers of fear ] she is the gods who drink soma and also don’t
drink soma.she is the 12 suns [ months 12 sons ].she is yatudhan [ a type of rakshasa ] asura,[
demons,yaksha [ celestial beings like fairies etc…]she is the siddha [ one with great mystical
powers ],she is satva-rajas-tamas 3 gunas,[ 3 type of behaviour –Worst type,moderate
type,best type ],she is brahma Vishnu rudra [ creator protector destroyer ],she is the lord of
mankind,she is the king of gods,she is the stars,planets,the various
elements,constellations,stars,she is the arts-and crafts-she is the one who destroys all.[ ie she
creates protects and destroys in cycles ]..the one who destroys all evil sins,One who gives
infinite pleasures [ physical and spiritual ] and also salvation into herself, One who is without
end,one who is worshipped for victory in life,one without Any negativity,one who should be

surrendered to,does of good and giver of all good,that divinely auspicious one we bow to her
and worship her.

18] She is truth consciousness bliss a-u-m,aum.sky,fire,crescent moon,this is the seed mantra
“ HREEM “.this is the giver of all desired results without any difficulty.

[ by chanting hreem or om hreem one gets all one desires,incl salvation ]

[ hreem is the main root seed mantra of mother and om is her form so om
hreem is most sacred mantra ].

19] Another mantra is : Aim hreem kleem chamundaye vicche

Meaning : speech – aim , creation energy – hreem , divine pleasure – kleem these r 3 very
important root-seed mantras.it also means : oh divine conscious form mahasaraswati,oh
divine truth from mahalaxmi , oh divine bliss form mahakali,

To gain divine supreme knowledge we are constantly meditating on your form….

20] Mahakali mahalaxmi mahasaraswati form mother durga-chandika,we bow to u.destroy


the stupor of ignorance and penetrate and destroy all lethargy and give us your energy
blessings and give us salvation.[ one does not have to die physically to get salvation,In
mother worship,we accept the fact that by worshipping mother and getting her divine grace
and blissful experiences,we gain salvation in her divine self,when alive into her lotus feet this
is known as jeevan mukti-salvation when still alive ].

21] One who dwells in the centre of the heart lotus of child=devotee,one who is red and
effulgent and shining like the rising sun,who holds the goad and noose, One whose form is
most pleasing to behold in every way,one who hold the blessing and protecting mudra-hand
gestures symbol,one with 3 eyes,one who is wearing red coloured clothes,and divine
ornaments,and one who fulfills all desires of the child,I worship u always.

22] Destroy of all and greatest fears instantly,destroyer of all crises and greatest crises,and
one who is most compassionate in all creation,oh divine mother I bow to you and always
worship you.

23] One whose form is not known by all gods like braham etc,that is why who is known as
formless,one whose aim is not known to anyone that is why she is known as whose aim is not
known,one whose birth is not known to anyone,that is why who is known as birthless [ never
born-created ],the one who is alone and all that exists that is why she is called the only one
being in existence,one who is seen as all of creation that is why she is called mother of all,she
is called,by these names : unknowable,infinite-unborn,unknowable, Supreme being,one and
only one,supreme mother.

24] The mother in all mantras,root of all knowledge,all knowledge,one who is above and
beyond all comprehension,the void within the void [ who is all of existence and also who is in
the nonexistent ] not another is superior to her,that mother durga is most famous.

25] That one who is all destroyer of all difficulties,all evil destroyer and giver of salvation in
this creation,instantly ie who rescues the soul from worldly entanglement,I who am afraid of
the world bow and surrender to her as mother durga,as she is the salvation giver.

Fruition of reading the shloka of sri devi Atharvasheesh :The one who reads and or meditates
on this [ studies this Atharvasheesh ] gets The benefit or fruit of reading all 5 Atharvasheesh [
ganapati shreedevi Vishnu shiva and sura ].

One who does not know this Atharvasheesh and consecrates an image of a deity He may not
get proper results. By reading this Atharvasheesh 108 times one gains siddhi-power of this
atharvasheesh.One who reads this 10 times becomes sinless immediately,and by the grace of
divine mother overcomes all obstacles. If read in morning it destroys sins committed in
night,if read in the midday it destroys Sins committed in till that time,if read in evening it
destroys sins committed In noon-evening time.

If one reads this Atharvasheesh in morning evening and night that person always remains
sinless. If one reads the Atharvasheesh at midnight one gets power to make his speech Come
true. When one reads this Atharvashasheesh near a new idol image when consecrating The
idol then the proper consecration happens.

When the first constellation ashwini is there on a Tuesday [ moon in ashhwini constellation ]
one does it when sitting near to mother idol or any good place that person overcomes the fear
of death.

Devi Atharva shirsha Recitation:

॥3॥ Ahamānandānānandau । ahaṃ vijñānāvijñāne । ahaṃ brahmābrahmaṇī veditavye ।


ahaṃ pañcabhūtānyapañcabhūtāni । ahamakhilaṃ jagat ॥3॥

॥4॥ Vedo ̕hamavedo ̕ham। vidyāhamavidyāham। ajāhamanajāham । adhaścordhvaṃ ca


tiryakcāham ॥4॥

॥5॥ Ahaṃ rudrebhirvasubhiścarāmi । ahamādityairuta viśvadevaiḥ ।

ahaṃ mitrāvaruṇāvubhau bibharmi । ahamindrāgnī ahamaśvināvubhau ॥5॥

॥6॥ Ahaṃ somaṃ tvaṣṭāraṃ pūṣaṇaṃ bhagaṃ dadhāmi। ahaṃ viṣṇumurukramaṃ


brahmāṇamuta prajāpatiṃ dadhāmi ॥6॥

॥7॥ Ahaṃ dadhāmi draviṇaṃ haviṣmate suprāvye u yajamānāya sunvate ।

ahaṃ rāṣṭrī saṅgamanī vasūnāṃ cikituṣī prathamā yajñiyānām ।

ahaṃ suve pitaramasya mūrdhanmama yonirapsvantaḥ samudre ।

ya evam ved। sa devīṃ sampadamāpnoti ॥7॥

॥8॥ te devā abruvan-

namo devyai mahādevyai śivāyai satataṃ namaḥ ।

namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām ॥8॥

॥9॥ tāmagnivarṇāṃ tapasā jvalantīṃ vairocanīṃ karmaphaleṣu juṣṭām ।

durgāṃ devīṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadyāmahe ̕surānnāśayitryai te namaḥ ॥9॥

॥10॥devīṃ vācamajanayanta devāstāṃ viśvarūpāḥ paśavo vadanti

sā no mandreṣamūrjaṃ duhānā dhenurvāgasmānupa suṣṭutaitu॥10॥

॥11॥ kālarātrīṃ brahmastutāṃ vaiṣṇavīṃ skandamātaram ।

sarasvatīmaditiṃ dakṣaduhitaraṃ namāmaḥ pāvanāṃ śivām ॥11॥

॥12॥ mahālakṣmyai ca vidmahe sarvaśaktyai ca dhīmahi ।

tanno devī pracodayāt ॥12॥

॥13॥ aditirhyajaniṣṭa dakṣa yā duhitā tava

tāṃ devā anvajāyanta bhadrā amṛtabandhavaḥ ॥13॥

॥14॥ kāmo yoniḥ kamalā vajrapāṇirguhā hasā mātariśvābhramindraḥ ।

punarguhā sakalā māyayā ca purūcyaiṣā viśvamātādividyom ॥14॥

॥15॥ eṣātmaśaktiḥ । eṣā viśvamohinī । pāśāṅkuśadhanurbāṇadharā । eṣā śrīmahāvidyā ।

saiṣā yātudhānā asurā rakṣāṃsi piśācā yakṣāḥ siddhāḥ ।

saiṣā sattvarajastamāṃsi । saiṣā brahmaviṣṇurudrarūpiṇī। saiṣā prajāpatīndramanavaḥ ।

saiṣā grahanakṣatrajyotīṃṣi । kalā kāṣṭhādikālarūpiṇī। tāmahaṃ praṇaumi nityam ।

pāpahāriṇīṃ devīṃ bhuktimuktipradāyinīm ।

anantāṃ vijayāṃ śuddhāṃ śaraṇyāṃ śivadāṃ śivām॥17॥

॥18॥ viyadīkārasaṃyuktaṃ vītihotrasamanvitam ।

ardhendulasitaṃ devyā bījaṃ sarvārthasādhakam ॥18॥

॥19॥ evamekākṣaraṃ brahma yatayaḥ śuddhacetasaḥ

dhyāyanti paramānandamayā jñānāmburāśayaḥ ॥19॥

॥20॥ vāṅmāyā brahmasūstasmāt ṣaṣṭhaṃ vaktrasamanvitam

suryo ̕vāmaśrotrabindusaṃyuktaṣṭāttṛtīyakaḥ ।

nārāyaṇena saṃmiśro vāyuścādharayuk tataḥ

vicce navārṇako ̕rṇaḥ syānmahadānandadāyakaḥ ॥20॥

॥21॥ Hṛtpuṇḍarīkamadhyasthāṃ prātaḥ sūryasamaprabhāṃ

pāśāṅkuśadharāṃ saumyāṃ varadābhayahastakām ।

trinetrāṃ raktavasanāṃ bhaktakāmadughāṃ bhaje ॥21॥

॥22॥ namāmi tvāṃ mahādevīṃ mahābhayavināśinīm ।

mahādurgapraśamanīṃ mahākāruṇyarūpiṇīm ॥22॥

॥23॥ yasyāḥ svarūpaṃ brahmādayo na jānanti tasmāducyate ajñeyā ।

yasyā anto na labhyate tasmāducyate anantā । yasyā lakṣyaṃ nopalakṣyate tasmāducyate


alakṣyā ।

yasyā jananaṃ nopalabhyate tasmāducyate ajā । ekaiva sarvatra vartate tasmāducyate ekā ।

ekaiva viśvarūpiṇī tasmāducyate naikā । ata evocyate ajñeyānantālakṣyājaikā naiketi ॥23॥

॥24॥ mantrāṇāṃ mātṛkā devī śabdānāṃ jñānarūpiṇī ।

jñānānāṃ cinmayātītā śūnyānāṃ śūnyasākṣiṇī ।

yasyāḥ parataraṃ nāsti saiṣā durgā prakīrtitā ॥24॥

॥25॥ tāṃ durgāṃ durgamāṃ devīṃ durācāravighātinīm ।

namāmi bhavabhīto ̕haṃ saṃsārārṇavatāriṇīm ॥25॥

॥26॥ idamatharvaśīrṣaṃ yo ̕dhīte sa pañcātharvaśīrṣajapaphalamāpnoti ।

idamatharvaśīrṣamajñātvā yo ̕rcāṃ sthāpayati śatalakṣaṃ prajaptvā ̕pi so ̕rcāsiddhiṃ na


vindati ।

śatamaṣṭottaraṃ cāsya puraścaryāvidhiḥ smṛtaḥ ।

daśavāraṃ paṭhedyastu sadyaḥ pāpaiḥ pramucyate ।

mahādurgāṇi tarati mahādevyāḥ prasādataḥ ॥26॥

॥27॥ sāyamadhīyāno divasakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati।prātaradhīyāno rātrikṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati


sāyaṃ prātaḥ prayuñjāno apāpo bhavati।niśīthe turīyasandhyāyāṃ japtvā vāksiddhirbhavati ।

nūtanāyāṃ pratimāyāṃ japtvā devatāsānnidhyaṃ bhavati ।

prāṇapratiṣṭhāyāṃ japtvā prāṇānāṃ pratiṣṭhā bhavati ।

bhaumāśvinyāṃ mahādevīsannidhau japtvā mahāmṛtyuṃ tarati ।

sa mahāmṛtyuṃ tarati ya evaṃ ved। ityupaniṣat ॥27॥
