Securing the Power Turbine Housing, DTC11

Background
The power turbine housing can twist due to vi-
bration. This causes leakage at the joints on the
expander box between the turbo exhaust pipe
and the power turbine housing. In the worst cas-
es, the power turbine housing may be in contact
with the chassis frame member.

Action
To secure the power turbine housing, fit a lock
pin into the side of the joint between the power
turbine and the power turbine housing. This
lock pin is fitted by drilling a hole in the V-
clamp, down into the joint between the power
turbine and its housing. The lock pin is fitted in
the hole and the V-clamp is replaced with a new
one.

Work description
1. Check whether the power turbine housing
has twisted. If it has, it must be adjusted to
the correct position before the hole for the
lock pin is drilled. The correct position is
when the power turbine housing intake is in
line with the exhaust pipe from the turbo-
charger and the intermediate expander box
can rotate and move to the side.
Secure the power turbine housing with the

V-clamp after adjusting.

Remove the exhaust pipe and expander box
from between the turbocharger and power
turbine housing.
This is done to allow access for drilling as
in point 3.

2. Use a centre punch to make a mark in the
centre of the V-clamp. Drill at any point
where access is easy.

3. Use a 4.1 mm diameter drill and mark a

depth of 15 mm using a piece of tape.
IMPORTANT! Take care to drill as
straight as possible to ensure that both sides
are worked.
Drill a hole which is 15 mm deep, measured
from the top of the V-clamp.

Note: There are two types of V-clamp as

shown in the adjacent figure. See the list of
part numbers. Both types should be drilled
to the same depth.

4. Blow the hole clean using compressed air.
Fit the lock pin in the hole.
5. Remove the drilled V-clamp and fit a new
one as indicated in the list of part numbers.
The current V-clamp, part number
1 345 185, will be replaced as a spare part
by a new type of V-clamp, part number
1 398 115, which is now fitted in produc-
tion. Both these V-clamps can be used to se-
cure the power turbine housing.
6. Fit the exhaust pipe for the turbocharger
and the intermediate expander box. Use the
new type of screw for the turbocharger, as
indicated in the list of part numbers.
Lubricate the expander box and the screws
with temperature-resistant paste, part
number 561 205.
