Philosophy of Health

Of the many healthcare professions in the world, nursing is the one that most resonate
with me. Nurses have many duties providing medical care for patients to working with doctors:
and beyond those responsibilities, they also serve as the connection between medical and
emotional aspects. Nurses are there for patients, always by their side, and always caring for them
medically and emotionally. They are the balance for patients who need someone to take care of
them professionally, while also showing compassion. Nurses have the oppurtunnity to connect
with patients through their care, touch, voice, and time.
Growing up, I was always scared of going to annual doctor visits. It was the time of year
that I dreaded, and I still remember that feeling. The time that I had finally gotten over my fear
of going to the doctor’s was because a nurse treated me well and helped me understand that there
was nothing to worry about. She could tell I was nervous and over-thinking everything, so she
sat down next to me and told me that the whole field of healthcare exists only to help us and that
I should be happy that I am able to go to a doctor’s office and receive healthcare. I learned to
appreciate healthcare and all of the workers because it truly is amazing that other people can treat
and save lives.
Because I learned the value of nursing and how each nurse contributes to the overall
healthcare system, I have always held the field of nursing in high regard. It is my belief that
nurses have the responsibility to help patients reach and maintain optimal health. With nurses
making up a majority of the healthcare population, all nurses should have skills in
communication, problem solving, time management, empathy, compassion, and teamwork. All
patients, no matter what ailment, should be cared for utilizing these skills. I not only want to treat
patients, but I want to understand how a patient gets ill or hurt to ensure they prioritize their
health and adapt to a new way of life. I also want to show the patient, and their family, that they
are not alone, and I will be there to take care of them outside the medical world. Nurses hold the
ability to make a difference in patients’ lives and I will strive to do that.
From studying Public Health, I know there are many aspects to obtaining excellent
health. One’s social, mental, emotional, and physical well-being is where health begins and ends.
Following receiving a Bachelor of Science in Health, with a focus in Public Health and minor in
Health Education, I plan to attend nursing school to receive an RN certificate. I will then work as
a nurse and execute all the skills necessary to a nurse. Society will benefit from my work because
I see the value in nurses and understand why they are greatly appreciated. I have seen from past
experiences how a nurse can change one’s course of thinking. I want to deliver the best care to
every patient I have. I will be attentive and hard-working all to put a smile on my future patient’s
face. Illness and injury are the most difficult experiences to deal with in life, and I am prepared
to help everyone to the best of my ability. Studying health has helped me prioritize my life and
learn that nursing is exactly what I want to and am meant to do. With the increasing demand for
nurses, it will be an honor to add to the healthcare field and carry out the necessary skills to reach
my full potential as a nurse. I will aim to make a difference for people through my career.
