English activities related to ‘English for Young Learners’


The suitable things to taught to Young Learners centered around
Speaking and Listening, because Young Learners especially toddlers are still
have lots of activities that related to their physics activities.
Reading and writing also suitable for Young Learners, but they might be
suitable for kids around 6-12 years old who are already recognizing alphabets
and knowing how to read and write.

Materials and Media for ‘English for Young Learners’


1. Listening
Of the four skills in English, young learners make the most of the lesson
through listening. They learn to understand the materials through listening, get
the instruction and explanation through listening, learn to pronounce words
through listening, and practice better through listening to teachers’ praises and
feedbacks. Therefore, listening skills become very crucial emphasis in the
teaching of English to young learners.
When teachers focus on classroom interaction, teachers can use their talks to
deliver the tasks and engage students to the designed activities. When teachers
put a lot of emphasis on teachers’ talks, clear and accurate pronunciation plays a
very important role.
On the other hand, in most listening activities, children simply listen
carefully to the material. Activities and practices are postponed until students
finish listening. Therefore when children listen to tapes first, they tend to guess
and interact less. So it is better to do come kind of practice before listening.
Students can arrange a set of jumbled pictures based on what is played on the
recording. Listening activities can also be designed as an interactive activity in
which students do what is stated in the recording. When listening to songs or
chants, children can sing along or imitate what is played.

Activity: The teachers play the short story in the video then the students have
to listen what’s topic of this video. The teacher should help them by give the
clue to the students. So that the students now what is they listen about.

2. Speaking

Children in our Indonesian classes have very little opportunities in using


English in communication. Therefore with this limitation each of them should
have the opportunities to speak during our lesson. If the class is large, then we
have to divide the class into several groups or place the students in pairs so that
they can work and help each other.

New expressions are best taught through listening activities. That way,
students will know exactly the pronunciation. To induce meaning to students,
teachers can act out or use picture to describe the word. Translating the new
word into students’ native language is unnecessary. Teachers can provide
themselves with puppets, pictures, cassettes, videos, and so forth. Puppets may
bring certain feelings among children. Children can enjoy acting out scenes with
puppets or toy animals. Students can develop their own characters and voices
based on the puppets. Pictures can help students in understanding meaning, they
can also be used in coloring activities, retelling stories, or language games.
Cassettes and videos are also wonderful for introducing songs, pronunciation,
and so on.

Activity: The teacher shows the picture on the flash card or the teacher could
draw a picture on white board, then the teacher ask the student what’s the
picture and anything related to the picture. The teacher also could help the
students in pronouncing the words.

3. Reading
The content of children’s literature can motivate the interest of students
to learn a new language. Bringing in children’s literature into English
language class can also create opportunities for language learners to practice
language in purposeful ways, and the experiences of reading children’s
literature encourages language learners to construct meaning and to engage
in active reading (Rigg & Allen, 1989; cited in Liu, 2000, p.189).
Among types of children’s literature, the picture book is the one that has
been suggested and used often by teachers because both the pictures and the
text work interdependently to tell a story, and the language-rich illustrations
create a rich contextualization (SpangenbergUrbschat & Prtichard, 1994;
Hadaway, Vardell, & Young, 2002; cited in Liu, 2000, p.191)
It is important to select books to support student learning from every
genre of children’s literature (Popps, 2005, p.85). A literary genre is a
specific kind of literature, such as biography, poetry, or historical fiction,
and each genre has certain characteristics that distinguish it from the others.
Moreover, there are certain characters that can be learn from each of the
story.

Activity: For learners around 6-12 years old, they should read the text
carefully and they retell the story with their own ideas.

4. Writing
Writing is recognized as the most difficult of the four language skills.
However, writing English can be a lot simpler than often appears, and the
children can have a lot of fun while learning. There are some reasons why
writing is important to be learned by young learners (Paul, 2005). One
reason is simply that by adding another skill, the children can learn target
pattern more deeply. Another reason is that writing is very visible. The
children, the teacher, and parents can all see what the children are learning
and can have a better idea of what has been accomplished.

Activity: The students should write the word on the guideline, then they
write it again but not in the guidline. The teachers should help them to do
it. The teachers also could help them spells each letters and help them to
pronounce the words.
